The six capability clusters, and what separates them

Twenty eight services is too many to hold in your head, so they are grouped into six clusters. The grouping is not filing convenience. Each cluster corresponds to a different set of equipment, a different technician skill set, and a different failure logic.

Collision and Structure

Anything that changed the shape of the vehicle. This cluster owns impact damage, frame geometry, composite shell repair, lamination failure, and storm impact. The defining question is whether the structure underneath is still doing its job, which is why these repairs almost always require removing finished surfaces before anyone can quote them honestly.

Paint and Finish

Everything that happens to the outside surface after the structure is right. Refinishing, color matching across large panels, correcting oxidized or swirled clear coat, protective coatings, and vinyl in all its forms.

The distinction from the collision cluster matters: paint follows structural repair, never the reverse. Finishing a panel before the substrate is stable means paying for the same finish twice.

Exterior and Enclosure

Everything whose job is keeping weather outside. Roofs, sealed penetrations, glass, doors, and compartments, plus the water damage and subfloor work that follows when one of them fails.

This is the cluster where damage is most often older than the customer thinks. The stain on a ceiling is downstream of the entry point, and by the time it is visible the water has usually been travelling for a while.

Mechanisms

Moving assemblies that stopped moving: slides, awnings, levelers, steps, and lift gates. What makes them a distinct cluster is that the visible failure is frequently mechanical while the cause is structural. A slide that binds on one corner is often telling you about the wall it lives in, not about its motor.

These jobs frequently cross into collision and structure once they are opened, and we say so at estimate rather than after.

Systems

Power, water, climate, and appliances. Electrical, solar and battery, generators, plumbing, heating and cooling, and the built in appliances that depend on all of the above. This is the cluster with the widest gap between symptom and cause, which is why systems work is diagnosed on the clock rather than quoted from a description.

A refrigerator that does not cool can be an appliance fault, a power supply fault, or a ventilation fault, and the three have nothing in common except the symptom.

Interior and Fabrication

Cabinetry, flooring, upholstery, custom metal and composite fabrication, reconditioning, and pre purchase inspection. Fabrication sits here because on RVs and modified vehicles the required part frequently does not exist, and making it is a normal step rather than an exception.

Reconditioning and pre purchase inspection are in this cluster for a practical reason: they are both about the condition of the whole vehicle rather than one failure on it.

Why the estimate is paid, explained plainly

We charge for estimates. Every one of them, for every customer, at a posted rate. It is worth explaining rather than burying, because it is the policy people ask about most.

An RV is not a passenger car, and the damage you can see is a poor predictor of the damage that exists. A composite sidewall transfers impact into framing without showing it. Water enters at a seam and surfaces wherever the floor slopes. A slide that hesitates might need a roller or might need the wall it rides in rebuilt. None of that can be determined from the parking lot, from photographs, or from a conversation. It requires a vehicle on a lift, seals lifted, panels sounded, moisture read, and systems energized, by a technician who is being paid to actually look.

A shop that inspects at no charge has to recover that time somewhere, and the usual recoveries are a shallow look, an optimistic number that wins the job and grows later, or unnecessary work added to cover the loss. You pay either way. The difference is whether you pay before you commit or after your vehicle is already apart.

How to work out which cluster your problem lives in

Boundaries between clusters are where people get stuck. These rules cover most of the confusion.

A few practical boundaries.

  • If the shape of the vehicle changed, it is collision and structure, even when the visible damage is small.
  • If the surface looks wrong but the shape is right, it is paint and finish.
  • If water got in, it is exterior and enclosure, and the roof is the first place to look regardless of where the stain appeared.
  • If something used to move and now does not, start in mechanisms, and expect the estimate to tell you whether the real cause is structural.
  • If it plugs in, burns fuel, holds water, or makes air cold, it is systems, and it will be diagnosed rather than quoted.
  • If it is about how the inside looks, feels, or is laid out, it is interior and fabrication.
  • If the part you need does not exist, that is fabrication, and it is a normal answer rather than a last resort.

All work is performed in shop. There is no mobile service, no roadside service, and no fleet route service, because the frame rack, the paint booth, the lift capacity, and the systems bench do not travel. Having every cluster under one roof is the point: a coach that arrives for collision work and turns out to need roof, slide, and electrical work does not get handed off to three other vendors with three other schedules.

What does an RV body shop actually work on besides body panels?

Here, everything the vehicle is made of. Body and structural repair is the core, but a single job routinely crosses into roofing, sealing, glass, slide mechanisms, electrical, plumbing, climate, appliances, cabinetry, and fabrication. That is the nature of the vehicle: a coach is a structure, a house, and a set of systems occupying the same shell, and damage to one almost always reaches the other two.

I do not know which service I need. Where should I start?

Start with the symptom table on this page and follow the row that matches what you are observing. If two rows fit, read both, because on an older vehicle overlapping symptoms usually mean overlapping problems. If nothing fits, call and describe what you are seeing in plain language. Working out which service applies is our job, not yours, and getting it wrong costs you nothing at the phone stage.

Why are your services grouped into clusters instead of one long list?

Because the clusters reflect real differences in equipment, skill, and diagnostic logic, and because they predict which repairs travel together. Structural work drags paint work behind it. Water intrusion drags subfloor and interior behind it. A mechanism failure frequently uncovers structure. Grouping by cluster tells you, before you call, roughly how far a job is likely to spread once it opens.

Can one job involve services from several clusters?

It usually does, and that is the argument for a shop that runs all six. A side impact commonly means collision repair, structural work, refinishing, a resealed penetration, and a slide realignment, plus whatever wiring passed through the damaged area. Splitting that across specialists means four schedules, four estimates, and nobody accountable for the seams between them. Here it is one job with one completion date.

Do you quote systems work the same way as body work?

No. Body and structural work is estimated after a physical inspection, and the scope is largely visible once panels come off. Systems faults are diagnosed on the clock, because the gap between symptom and cause is wide and unpredictable. An appliance that will not run can be the appliance, the supply, or the ventilation, and the only way to know which is to test rather than assume. Which service should I look at if my RV has water damage?

Two pages, in this order. Start with roof repair, because the majority of intrusion enters through the roof or a roof edge penetration regardless of where the stain shows up. Then read water damage and subfloor, which covers what happens to structure and flooring once water has been present for a while. Treating the visible stain without finding the entry point is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

Do you do the whole repair in house or subcontract parts of it?

All six clusters are performed in shop at our Yorba Linda facility, on our own equipment, by our own technicians. That includes structural work on the frame rack, refinishing in the booth, systems diagnosis on the bench, and fabrication when a part does not exist. Nothing gets shipped out to a partner shop, which is why a job that spreads across clusters keeps one schedule and one point of contact.

How long does a typical RV repair take?

Labor hours are forecastable. Parts are not, and on RVs parts are usually the entire answer. Components from low volume manufacturers can take weeks, and discontinued panels are a real risk on older coaches.
