That covers the outer skin, the panel joints, the bonded seams, the stud or rib behind the skin, and any component that was in the load path and now sits out of position. Damage and failure modes we see
The five patterns below account for most of the impact work that comes through the bays. Each one has a signature at the point of contact and a second, less obvious signature somewhere else on the vehicle. Reading the second one correctly is what separates a repair that holds from one that opens back up in a year.
Backing strike into a fixed object
Cause: reversing into a post, a bollard, a tree, or a dock edge at low speed. The contact patch is small and the object does not move, so almost all of the energy goes into a single stud bay.
Symptom: a deep, sharply bounded dish in the sidewall with the skin still intact, and a matching bow in the interior wall panel two to three feet away. On a laminated wall the outer fiberglass often survives while the block foam behind it crushes flat.
Delay consequence: the crushed foam no longer supports the skin, so the panel flexes every time the coach moves. That flex works the bonded seam at the nearest joint until it opens, and then you have a water path in addition to a dent.
High speed sideswipe across multiple panels
Cause: a lane change contact or a guardrail scrape. Energy arrives at a shallow angle and travels the length of the coach rather than into it.
Symptom: long, shallow damage crossing two or more panel joints, torn seam sealant, sheared rivet heads along the drip rail, and awning arm mounts pulled outboard. Damage depth is usually under half an inch but the affected length can run twenty feet.
Delay consequence: sheared fasteners along a drip rail let the rail lift under highway air load. Once it lifts, water tracks behind the skin at speed, which is the single most expensive secondary failure in this category.
Overhead and low clearance impact
Cause: a fuel canopy, a parking structure beam, a drive-through overhang, or a tree limb. The strike lands on the highest forward point of the vehicle.
Symptom: the roof to front cap joint separates, the cabover on a Class C shears at its bonded flange, and roof-mounted equipment shifts on its mounting plate. Interior evidence is a cracked ceiling panel seam directly under the joint.
Delay consequence: that joint is the primary weather seal on the front of the coach. It is also the joint under the most vibration load, so a partial separation grows every mile. Left alone it becomes a decking replacement.
Rear impact into a towable front wall
Cause: being struck while parked, or a jackknife event where the tow vehicle contacts the trailer. On a fifth wheel the energy enters at the pin box or the A-frame and drives forward into the front wall.
Symptom: buckled front wall skin above the pin box, popped fasteners on the front cap radius, and cabinetry doors inside that no longer latch square. The pin box mounting plate may show elongated bolt holes.
Delay consequence: elongated bolt holes at the pin box are a towing safety issue, not a cosmetic one. Any coupling hardware that moved is inspected before the trailer leaves, and if it moved, the job crosses into structural scope.
Curb and wheel path strike
Cause: clipping a curb, dropping a wheel off pavement, or striking road debris at the axle line.
Symptom: crushed lower skirt, torn wheel well liner, deformed spring hanger or equalizer bracket, and a fender that no longer sits parallel to the tire. On a motorhome the compartment floor above the strike may be pushed up.
Delay consequence: this is the impact category most likely to be structural despite looking minor. A bent hanger changes axle alignment, which scrubs tires and loads the frame asymmetrically. We measure before we quote sheet work.
How we perform this repair
Every collision job here runs the same sequence. The order matters, because writing a repair plan before teardown is how supplements turn into arguments halfway through a job.
The sequence, start to finish:
- Intake and impact interview. We record direction of travel, closing speed, what was struck, and whether the vehicle was driven afterward. That determines where we expect the energy to have terminated.
- Teardown to substrate. Interior wall panels, cabinetry, and insulation come out of the affected bays so we can see the stud cage directly. Every stage is photographed against a tape reference for the estimate file.
- Energy path mapping. We chalk the load path on the exposed framing and check every member along it for buckling, cracked welds, and fastener elongation. Suspect members get checked with a straightedge and feeler gauge rather than by eye.
- Structural decision point. If any diagonal, ride height, or rail reference is suspect, the vehicle goes on the rack and the job is rewritten as structural work before body labor is spent.
- Sectioning and panel replacement. Cuts are made at a factory joint where one exists, or at a fabricated butt joint with a bonded backer where one does not. Aluminum framing is joined with structural blind rivets or Huck fasteners, never with self-tappers into a hollow section.
- Bonding and seam work. Panel bonding uses a two part urethane adhesive with the substrate abraded and primed to the adhesive maker specification. Sikaflex 221 goes on non-structural seams, and structural flange bonds use the higher modulus product specified for the panel type.
- Filler discipline and closeout. Polyester filler is a skim over a bonded and faired surface, capped at roughly one eighth inch, never a substitute for metalwork. Seams get sealed, drip rails get reset with fresh butyl, and the coach moves to refinish.

Frequently asked questions
How do you know if a collision damaged the structure and not just the body?
You find out by measuring, not by looking. We check ride height, rail-to-rail diagonals, and the relationship of the axle centerline to a fixed body reference. If any of those fall outside factory tolerance, or if a member shows a buckle, a cracked weld, or elongated fastener holes, the damage is structural. A dent can be six inches deep and non-structural, and a panel can look nearly straight while a rail behind it is bent.
Why does an RV collision estimate change after teardown so often?
Because the entire load path is hidden behind a bonded wall. On a car, an estimator can see most of the damage from outside. On a coach, the outer fiberglass can look survivable while the block foam behind it is crushed and two aluminum studs are folded. Until the interior panel comes off, nobody knows. That is why we do not treat the first estimate as final and why supplements are written and submitted before the labor happens.
Can a fiberglass RV sidewall be sectioned instead of replaced whole?
Yes, and on large panels it is usually the correct call. We cut at a factory joint where the design provides one, or at a fabricated butt joint backed by a bonded doubler where it does not. The joint has to land where the substrate can support it, which normally means over a stud. Sectioning mid-span across unsupported foam creates a flex line that will telegraph through the finish within a season.
Is it safe to drive an RV after a collision before repair?
Not until someone checks the suspension mounting points and the coupling hardware. Skin damage does not affect drivability, but a curb strike or a rear impact can move a spring hanger or elongate pin box bolt holes without leaving obvious evidence. Anything that moved in the running gear or the coupling is a road safety issue. What holds a sectioned RV panel together, rivets or adhesive?
Both, in different roles. Structural blind rivets or Huck fasteners carry mechanical load through the framing members, and a two part urethane panel adhesive carries shear across the bonded flange while sealing the joint. We never use self-tapping screws into a hollow aluminum extrusion as a structural fastener, because the threads pull out under vibration. Bond surfaces are abraded and primed to the adhesive manufacturer specification before anything is joined.
How much body filler is acceptable on a collision repair?
Filler is a skim coat over a surface that is already straight, capped at roughly one eighth of an inch. If a repair needs more than that, the substrate was not brought back correctly and the filler is hiding it. Thick polyester filler over a flexing composite panel cracks along the perimeter within a year or two, usually right after the first hot summer. We fair with the laminate and use filler only for final surface tolerance.
Does a rear corner strike on a box truck affect the roll-up door?
Frequently, yes. The rear corner post on a box body is a structural member that carries the door track and one end of the rear header. Bend the post and the track goes out of parallel, so the door binds or jumps its rollers even though the door itself is undamaged. We check track parallelism and header squareness on every rear corner impact before quoting the door hardware.
