What belongs in this category
This category exists because high voltage changes the order of operations rather than the nature of the work. A dented fender is still a dented fender. What changes is that on an EV, the panel above the pack cannot be touched until the pack is de-energized and that condition has been proven with instruments, and that the joining method underneath the paint is usually adhesive and rivets rather than spot welds.
It differs from the other categories on the site in that the organizing principle is a system rather than a body type. An electric delivery van is also a commercial vehicle, and a Rivian R1T is also a pickup. They are here because the high voltage system governs how the repair is planned and who is allowed to do which part of it.

What these platforms have in common in the shop
Five things are true of every high voltage vehicle we take in, and together they explain why an EV repair takes longer and costs more than the same visible damage on a combustion vehicle.
First, the disable procedure. Before any panel work, the high voltage system is shut down following the manufacturer published sequence for that vehicle. This is not a matter of pulling a plug, and it is not something to do from a video. Second, isolation verification. De-energized is a claim until it is measured, so the condition is proven with instruments and documented before anyone opens a panel. Those two steps happen on every EV, including for small repairs, because the consequence of getting it wrong is not a comeback, it is an injury.
Third, technician competence. Only trained technicians perform the disable and verification, and we keep that work with the people qualified to do it rather than spreading it around the shop. Where a manufacturer restricts a specific structural or battery enclosure repair to its certified network, we say so and hand over our documentation instead of attempting it.
Fourth, joining method. EV bodies lean heavily on structural adhesive, self piercing rivets, aluminum and mixed material construction. That means specified joint preparation, dissimilar metal separation, and a clean physical separation between aluminum and steel work in the shop, because steel dust in an aluminum panel becomes corrosion later. Fifth, calibration. Sensors, cameras and radar are mounted in panels, so anything that moves a panel has changed a sensor aim. Calibration is scoped from the first estimate rather than added at the end.
Beyond those five, the physical constraints are ordinary: bay space, clean areas for adhesive work, and a paint process that respects the mixed materials underneath. Why can EV panels not simply be pulled and filled like steel ones?

Because a lot of them are aluminum, and aluminum behaves differently. It has far less usable spring back, no memory to bring it home once it has yielded, and it cracks rather than stretching past its limit. On top of that, many EV panels are bonded into the structure with adhesive and rivets rather than spot welded, so removing and replacing one is a specified process. Manufacturers publish which panels can be worked and which must be replaced.
Does my hybrid fleet van need the same handling as a full EV?

Yes, and owners are often surprised by it. A hybrid carries a traction battery and high voltage cabling even though the pack is smaller and the vehicle drives like a conventional van. The disable and isolation verification steps apply before panel work, particularly on lower body repairs where cable routing runs. The rest of the repair is usually more conventional than a full EV, since hybrids more often use steel bodies with familiar joining.
Why does calibration appear on nearly every EV estimate?

Because sensors live in the panels.
