What this repair covers

Refinish work runs from the smallest spot repair to a complete strip and repaint. In between sit the jobs that make up most of the volume: refinishing a panel that was just repaired, blending into the panels adjacent to it, and reproducing a factory multi-stage graphic scheme so a repaired section is not obviously newer than the coach around it.

It also includes the preparation that decides everything downstream. Substrate identification, stripping or sanding, primer and sealer selection, and masking are the majority of the labor on any refinish job, and on a full body motorhome repaint the masking alone can exceed the spraying time several times over.

Damage and failure modes we see

Most refinish work is either repairing collision damage or replacing a coating that has failed. The second category is worth understanding, because the failure mode dictates whether the old finish can be recoated or has to come off entirely.

Clearcoat delamination and peeling

Cause: ultraviolet breakdown of the clear layer, usually accelerated when the original film was thin or when the surface below it was contaminated at application. Roofs, upper sidewalls, and the tops of caps go first because they receive the most direct exposure.

Symptom: the clear lifting in sharp-edged islands, often starting at a graphic edge or a panel high point, with dull basecoat visible underneath. The boundary is crisp rather than gradual, which is what distinguishes it from oxidation.

Delay consequence: once the clear is gone, the basecoat is unprotected and starts losing pigment and binder rapidly. Recoating a peeling clear does not work. The failed layer has to come off back to a sound surface, and every month of delay grows the area that has to be stripped.

Solvent popping and dieback from prior repairs

Cause: coating applied too heavily or forced to cure before solvent had escaped. Trapped solvent leaves the film after cure and blows small craters through it, or the film continues to shrink and loses gloss over the following weeks.

Symptom: pinhole craters visible in raking light across an area that corresponds to a previous repair, or a repair that looked perfect at delivery and dulled noticeably within a month while the surrounding original paint stayed glossy.

Delay consequence: popped film is porous. Moisture and contamination reach the layers below through the craters, so what began as a cosmetic defect becomes an adhesion problem in the primer beneath it.

Edge mapping and bullseye over old repairs

Cause: spraying over a previous repair whose feathered edges were not properly sealed. Solvent in the new coating swells the exposed layers of the old repair unevenly.

Symptom: concentric rings visible in the new finish that trace the sanding boundary of a repair underneath it. It appears during or shortly after application, not months later, and it appears wherever an unsealed edge was.

Delay consequence: this is a rework, not a wear issue. The affected area is sanded back, sealed correctly, and resprayed. The reason we sand and probe for previous repairs before quoting is precisely to price this risk instead of discovering it in the booth.

Silicone contamination and fisheye

Cause: years of silicone-bearing dressings, waxes, and cleaners on and around the vehicle. Silicone lowers surface tension in the wet film and the coating pulls away from the contaminated spot.

Symptom: small round craters with a raised rim appearing in the wet coating, often clustered near trim, rub rails, and tire wells where dressings were applied most heavily.

Delay consequence: silicone migrates. A coach that has been dressed for a decade carries contamination in the seams and the porous surfaces, and if it is not removed with a dedicated wax and grease remover before sanding, sanding drives it deeper into the substrate rather than removing it.

Mismatched previous panel work

Cause: a prior repair sprayed to the factory formula rather than to the vehicle, with no spray-out verification and no blend. Factory formulas are a starting point, and production variance plus years of exposure mean the vehicle is rarely the formula.

Symptom: a panel that reads correct straight on and clearly off at an angle, which is a flop mismatch in a metallic or pearl, or a hard tape line at a panel edge where the two colors meet.

Delay consequence: nothing gets worse physically, but the repair options narrow over time as the surrounding panels continue to weather away from the repaired one. Correcting a mismatch is usually a re-spray with a proper blend, and the sooner it is done the fewer panels are involved.

How we perform this repair

Refinish work is mostly preparation. The spraying is the short part, and it only goes well when everything ahead of it was done to specification.

The sequence, start to finish:

  1. Decontaminate before touching abrasive. The vehicle is washed and then wiped with a dedicated wax and grease remover over the entire refinish area, twice, with clean cloths each pass. Sanding a contaminated surface pushes silicone into the substrate instead of removing it.
  2. Identify the substrate and choose the primer system. Fiberglass and gelcoat, aluminum, galvanized steel, and flexible plastics each need a different primer chemistry. Bare metal gets an etch or an epoxy direct-to-metal primer, and flexible substrates get an adhesion promoter before anything else goes on.
  3. Strip, sand, and build. Failed coatings come off to a sound layer. Repaired areas get a two component urethane surfacer, guide coated and blocked with 320 then 400 grit on a long board so the surface is flat rather than merely smooth.
  4. Read the color, then verify it. A spectrophotometer reads the existing finish at multiple angles and returns candidate formula variants for that color code. That is the starting point, not the answer. Every color is sprayed on a let-down card and checked against the vehicle in daylight before a drop goes on the coach.
  5. Seal and mask. A sealer coat evens porosity and prevents edge mapping over feathered repairs. Masking follows the blend plan, and on a full body scheme the tape-out schedule for layered graphics is established before the first color so each subsequent layer registers correctly.
  6. Spray basecoat and clear to system specification. Basecoat goes on in cross-hatched passes at the specified film build, with the manufacturer flash time between coats respected rather than shortened. Two component urethane clear follows at the specified number of coats. Booth temperature and airflow are set for the reducer and hardener chosen for that day's conditions, not for a default.
  7. Bake, then cut and buff. The coating is baked on the manufacturer schedule, allowed to cool fully, and then de-nibbed and polished where texture or an inclusion needs correcting. The vehicle is not reassembled until the film has cured enough to handle without printing.

What this costs and how we quote it

Refinish is estimated in paint hours plus a materials allowance calculated as a rate against those hours, which is the same convention every carrier estimating system uses. Paint hours are derived from panel count, panel size, and the number of stages in the color: a single stage solid is fewer hours than a basecoat and clear, which is fewer than a tri-coat pearl.

The line that surprises people on RVs is masking. A full body motorhome with a multi-color graphic scheme can carry more masking and tape-out hours than actual spraying hours, because each layer of the scheme requires its own registration and its own cure before the next can be laid over it. What is a blend panel and why is it necessary?

A blend panel is an adjacent, undamaged panel that receives a fading application of the new color so the transition between old and new is gradual rather than a hard line. It is necessary on metallics and pearls because those colors change appearance with viewing angle, and even a perfect formula match will read differently across an abrupt edge. Blending is a manufacturer-specified operation with defined limits, not a shop preference, and estimating systems have line entries for it.

Can you paint over RV gelcoat without stripping it?

Yes, when the gelcoat is sound. Sound gelcoat is an excellent substrate: it is sanded to profile, cleaned with wax and grease remover, primed with a compatible system, and refinished. What cannot be painted over is gelcoat that is heavily crazed, chalked deeply, or delaminating, because the new coating will only be as attached as the surface it sits on. That assessment happens with a probe and a solvent wipe at the estimate, and it changes the price significantly.

Why do full body RV repaints take so long?

Masking and layered graphics. A full body scheme is not one color, it is often four to seven colors applied in sequence, and each one needs its own tape-out, its own registration to the layers below it, and its own cure before the next can go over it. On a 40 foot coach the taping alone can run into the tens of hours per layer. The actual spraying is a small fraction of the calendar time, which is why a full repaint is measured in weeks rather than days.

What is the difference between single stage and basecoat clearcoat?

Single stage combines the color and the gloss resin in one product, so what you spray is the final finish. Basecoat and clearcoat separates them: the basecoat carries the color and has almost no gloss on its own, and a clear layer over it provides gloss, ultraviolet protection, and the sacrificial surface you polish. Basecoat and clear is the standard for anything metallic or pearl, is more repairable, and holds gloss far longer under California sun.

Why does new paint sometimes get dull weeks after a repair?

That is dieback, and it means solvent was still leaving the film after it appeared cured. It happens when coats were applied too heavily, when flash time between coats was shortened, or when the film was forced to bake before solvent had escaped. Some dieback can be polished back to gloss. Severe cases require the film to be sanded down and resprayed, which is why flash times and film build get respected rather than rushed even when a schedule is tight.

Does an RV need to be painted indoors in a booth?

For anything you intend to keep, yes. A downdraft booth controls three things that decide the outcome: airborne contamination, which becomes dirt inclusions in the film; air temperature and velocity, which control flash and cure; and solvent extraction, which is both a finish requirement and an air quality requirement. We operate under EPA identification CAL000367879, and outdoor spraying of these coatings is not a legitimate option in California regardless of quality considerations.

Can a repaired panel be matched without repainting the whole side?

Usually yes, using a blend into the immediately adjacent panels rather than a full side. The exception is a color with a strong flop characteristic, some pearls and some silvers in particular, where the eye picks up a difference across a longer run and the blend has to extend further. We determine which situation applies at the spray-out card stage, before spraying, so the panel count in the estimate reflects what the color actually needs.
