What belongs in this category

A motorhome is a self propelled recreational vehicle. There is a chassis with a drivetrain underneath and a habitation structure above, and the boundary between them is where most of the interesting problems live. That is the line that separates this category from the neighboring ones on the site.

Campers and trailers are the towable equivalent. Everything about the living space is similar, but there is no cab, no drivetrain and no engine bay, and the failure points shift to the coupling, the axles and the frame. Vans and camper vans sit next door in the other direction: a Class B is a factory built motorhome on a van chassis, while a van conversion is a van that somebody made habitable, and the difference matters for parts, for documentation and for how an insurer sees the vehicle. Commercial trucks share the chassis families used under Super C coaches and bus conversions but carry no habitation systems at all.

One thing this category does not include is engine and drivetrain work. We are a body, structure, paint, enclosure, mechanism and habitation systems shop. Chassis mechanical work goes to a chassis specialist, and we will tell you that rather than take the vehicle in and subcontract it out.

Platforms we cover

Seven drivable platforms have their own pages, because each one has a construction method and a damage profile that does not transfer to the others. A cab over bunk problem is meaningless on a diesel pusher. A rear engine air suspension problem is meaningless on a Class B.

If you are unsure which page is yours, sort by chassis and layout rather than by brand. Brands move between chassis families constantly, so the badge on the front cap tells you very little about how the coach is built.

How to find your platform quickly:

  • Flat front, engine ahead of the driver, wide front cap: a Class A gas coach on a Ford or Workhorse chassis.
  • Flat front, engine at the rear, air suspension, usually the heaviest coach in the lot: a Class A diesel pusher.
  • Van sized, factory built, the van body is the structure and there is no separate coach shell: a Class B camper van.
  • A recognizable truck cab with a bunk overhanging it: a Class C on a cutaway chassis.
  • A commercial truck cab with a full coach behind it and a heavier rating than a Class C: a Super C.
  • A commercial coach shell converted to living space, professionally or otherwise: a bus conversion.
  • A school bus converted by its owner: a skoolie, which is its own page because the build quality is the first thing we assess.

Subtypes we handle without a dedicated page

Some coaches sit between the seven platforms above, or are a variation on one of them rather than a category of their own. They come in regularly and we handle them, but they do not need their own page because the repair thinking is inherited from the platform they are built on.

Luxury Class A coaches

High end diesel coaches with full body paint, multi stage graphics and heavy option content. The construction is the diesel pusher platform. What changes is the finish work, because a full body paint scheme with layered graphics is a refinishing project rather than a panel repair, and the color and layout have to be reproduced exactly across a very large surface.

Compact Class C coaches

Short wheelbase cutaway coaches, often on a smaller chassis, aimed at owners who want a Class C that parks like a van. Same cab over construction and the same leak prone joint above the cab, in a package where every repair takes a larger percentage of the total structure because there is simply less of it.

Off road and expedition RVs

Four wheel drive and heavy chassis coaches built for washboard, river crossings and long distance travel away from pavement. The damage set is fatigue and impact rather than parking lot contact: cracked mounts, loosened habitation attachment points, underbody and lower body strikes, and sealant that has been shaken loose over thousands of rough miles.

Vintage and classic RVs

Coaches old enough that no parts channel exists, where every repair is either fabrication or a careful reuse of what is there. We take these on with a clear conversation about scope first, because the honest answer on an older coach is often that the structure needs more work than the visible damage suggests.

Custom converted coaches

One off builds that started as something else entirely: a commercial coach, a horse transporter, a moving van. The build documentation is usually thin or nonexistent, so the first phase of any job is establishing what the previous builder actually did before we decide how to repair it.

What these platforms have in common in the shop

Whatever the platform, a drivable coach imposes the same physical constraints on a repair facility, and those constraints are why plenty of body shops will not take this work at all.

Height and length come first. A 45 foot coach with rooftop equipment needs door height, bay length and turning room, and it needs all three at once. Our 35,000 square foot facility is laid out for that, but it still means a coach occupies a footprint that would hold several cars, which is why staging matters as much as capacity. We schedule these jobs so a coach is not sitting in a bay waiting on a part it could have waited for outside.

Weight is the second constraint. A loaded diesel pusher is heavy enough that lifting, supporting and moving it are planned operations, not casual ones, and it also means a coach cannot simply be pushed out of the way when priorities change. Paint is the third. Refinishing a full height coach side is a booth size and airflow problem before it is a color matching problem, and a full body paint scheme cannot be done in sections without the result showing.

The last shared constraint is that a coach is a house. Water intrusion, sealant condition and roof integrity are standing inspection items on every intake regardless of why the vehicle came in, because finding a wet sidewall during a collision repair is far cheaper for you than finding it next year.

Insurance and paperwork for this category

Motorhome claims differ from car claims in two ways that catch owners out. First, the vehicle contains a house, so the damage list includes habitation systems that a standard adjuster may not think to look for, and those get missed unless the shop documents them. Second, values vary enormously between two coaches that look identical from outside, because option content and full body paint are worth a great deal and neither is visible in a photograph.

We write these files with the chassis, the body, the finish and the habitation systems itemized separately, and we photograph everything before disassembly. If a coach is heading toward a settlement rather than a repair, we would rather establish that early.

What is the difference between a motorhome and a camper for repair purposes?

A motorhome drives itself, so it has a chassis, a cab and a drivetrain underneath the living space, and a repair often crosses the boundary between the two. A camper or trailer is towed, so there is no cab or engine bay and the structural attention shifts to the frame, axles, suspension and coupling. The living space work is similar on both. Everything below it is different, which is why they are separate categories here.

Do you do engine or transmission work on motorhomes?

No. We are a body, structure, paint, enclosure, mechanism and habitation systems facility. Engine, transmission, driveline and brake work belongs with a chassis specialist for your particular chassis family, and gas coach, diesel pusher and commercial truck chassis are all served by different specialists. We will tell you plainly that a job is outside our scope rather than accept the vehicle and quietly send it elsewhere.

Can you handle a 45 foot coach?

Yes. Our facility is 35,000 square feet with the door height, bay length and turning room a full length coach with rooftop equipment needs. The practical limit is usually staging rather than size: a coach occupies a footprint that would hold several vehicles, so we schedule long coaches deliberately and avoid having one sit in a bay while it waits on a part. Which page should I read if my coach is a bus conversion?

Start with the bus conversion page if the shell is a commercial coach that was converted professionally or by a previous owner. Start with the skoolie page if it began life as a school bus and was converted by an individual. The distinction matters because the assessment work is different: on a converted commercial coach we are usually working with documented construction, while on an owner built conversion the first task is establishing what was actually done.

Why do you inspect for water intrusion when I came in for collision damage?

Because a motorhome is a house, and water damage is the most expensive problem it can have. Sealant condition, roof integrity and moisture in the sidewalls are standing inspection items on every coach that comes through the door, regardless of why it arrived. Finding a wet sidewall while the vehicle is already apart for a collision repair costs you a fraction of what it costs to find it a year later after the structure has softened.

Is a Class B camper van covered here or under the van category?

Under this category, on the Class B page. A Class B is a factory built motorhome that happens to use a van body, and the important repair fact is that the van body is the structure. How does full body paint change a motorhome repair?

It turns a panel repair into a refinishing project. Full body paint schemes use multiple colors, layered graphics and long flowing lines that cross panel boundaries, so the repair area cannot simply be blended into a nearby edge the way a single color panel can. Reproducing the scheme means recreating layout and color across a very large surface, and it is a booth size and airflow problem before it is a color matching problem.
