What this repair covers
An RV runs two entirely separate electrical systems in the same vehicle. The 12V DC side feeds lights, pumps, fans, controllers, and the slide and jack motors, and it is unforgiving of voltage drop because everything on it draws real current at low voltage. The 120V AC side feeds outlets, air conditioning, and the microwave, and it is unforgiving of bad grounds because that is what makes it dangerous rather than merely broken.
Almost all RV electrical work is one of three things: a connection that is no longer making, a conductor that is too small or too damaged for the load it carries, or a ground and bonding arrangement that is wrong. Component failure is real but far less common than owners expect, which is why we measure before we replace.

Electrical complaints arrive as symptoms, and the symptom rarely names the fault. These are the recurring root causes behind most of what comes through the door.
Hot skin voltage from an open ground or reverse polarity supply
This is the most serious fault on the list and the one owners most often describe casually. A tingle when touching the entry step or door frame while plugged in means the coach body is sitting at a voltage relative to earth. The usual cause is an open equipment ground somewhere between the pedestal and the coach, which removes the path that would otherwise trip a breaker, combined with normal capacitive leakage from appliances.
Reverse polarity at a pedestal produces a related hazard by energizing what should be the neutral side of everything. Neither condition announces itself with a blown fuse; the coach works normally right up until someone standing on wet ground touches it. We test for hot skin voltage as a matter of course on any AC complaint, and it is the one fault where we will tell an owner not to use the coach until it is fixed.
Automatic transfer switch contact failure
A transfer switch selects between shore power and generator and does it with relay contacts carrying the full coach load. Those contacts pit and burn over time, especially if the switch has been transferring under load repeatedly. Once resistance builds at a contact, it heats, and the heating accelerates the damage.
The symptoms come in a distinctive pattern: one leg of the coach works and the other does not, air conditioning that will not start on shore power but runs on the generator, or lights dimming when a large load starts. Advanced cases show heat discoloration on the case and a smell. A transfer switch left in this condition eventually welds a contact closed or starts a fire, and it is a component we replace rather than clean up.
Rodent damage to the harness
Rodents nest in RVs during storage and chew insulation, and the damage concentrates in the places that are hardest to reach: above the ceiling, inside the basement compartments, along the chassis harness, and behind appliances. Some of it is intermittent, since a partially chewed conductor works until vibration opens it.
The dangerous part is that chewed 120V insulation puts a bare conductor against a metal chassis member with no immediate symptom. We find this on inspection far more often than owners report it, because the first evidence is usually droppings and a smell rather than an electrical fault. Repair is done by cutting back to sound insulation and splicing with heat shrink sealed connectors, section by section, rather than by taping over damage.
Corroded grounds and bonding points
On the 12V side, ground is usually the chassis, and the connection is a ring terminal bolted to painted or coated steel. That joint corrodes, resistance climbs, and every circuit sharing that ground starts behaving strangely: lights that dim when the pump runs, a fan that slows when a light comes on, controllers that reset for no visible reason.
The diagnostic mistake is chasing the load side. A dim light is measured at the fixture, found low, and the fixture gets replaced. Measuring voltage drop across the ground path under load finds the real fault in seconds. On the AC side, an improperly bonded neutral, meaning bonded in more than one place or not bonded where it should be, creates the conditions for hot skin voltage and for nuisance GFCI tripping.
Voltage drop from undersized or fatigued 12V runs
The 12V side moves large currents at low voltage over surprisingly long distances in a big coach, and voltage drop is proportional to current, length, and inverse to conductor area. Original wiring is often sized to just meet the need, and years of vibration work the crimps loose and corrode the conductor inside the insulation.
The symptoms show as underperformance rather than failure: a slide that runs slower than it used to, a jack that stalls, a pump that will not build pressure, a step that struggles. Owners replace motors. The motor was fine, but it was seeing several volts less than it needed at the terminals. Any motor complaint on a 12V circuit gets a voltage drop measurement at the load under running current before a part is quoted.
Aftermarket and owner installed circuits
A large share of what we correct was added by someone else: a stereo tapped into a lighting circuit, an inverter output backfed into a panel with no transfer arrangement, a heavy accessory on an undersized conductor, or a run of wire with no fuse at the source. These installations often work for years and then cause a fault whose symptom appears far from the actual problem.
The consequences vary from nuisance to serious. Backfeeding a panel from an inverter without a proper transfer means the shore cord can be energized. An unfused conductor from a battery is the most common cause of an RV wiring fire. When we open a panel and find this work, we document it, explain what is wrong, and correct it to the standard the coach was built to rather than leaving it.
How we perform this repair
Electrical diagnosis is measurement, in a fixed order, under load. Anything else is parts replacement with extra steps.
The process, start to finish:
- Verify the source before the coach. The shore power inlet, the cordset, and the supply are tested first with a polarity and ground tester and a meter, because a pedestal problem produces symptoms inside the coach that look exactly like a coach problem. We test at our own known good supply so the variable is removed.
- Test for hot skin voltage. A measurement from the coach body to a known earth reference, taken on any AC complaint, catches the one fault on this page that is genuinely dangerous. If it is present, the ground path is found and repaired before any other work proceeds.
- Map the distribution and check the panels. The load center is opened, breakers and fuses identified against the circuits they feed, and terminations checked for heat discoloration and torque. A thermal camera on the panel under load finds a loose or resistive termination immediately, which a visual inspection will not.
- Test the transfer switch under real conditions. The switch is exercised between shore and generator with load applied, voltage measured on both legs at the output, and contact condition inspected. Heat marking, pitting, or a measurable voltage difference between legs under load condemns it.
- Measure voltage drop at the load, not at the panel. For every 12V complaint we measure at the device terminals with the device running, then measure drop separately across the positive path and the ground path with a meter. That single test distinguishes a bad component from a bad supply, and it is the step most often skipped elsewhere.
- Trace and repair the harness properly. Circuits are traced with a tone generator and probe where the run is buried. Damaged sections are cut back to sound insulation and repaired with tinned marine grade conductor of the correct gauge, adhesive lined heat shrink connectors, and proper strain relief and abrasion protection. Rodent damaged areas are repaired section by section rather than patched, and the entry points get closed.
- Correct grounds, protect the circuit, and verify. Ground and bonding points are cleaned to bare metal, treated, and re-terminated. Every added or repaired circuit is protected at its source at the correct rating for the conductor. The system is then loaded, re-measured at the same points, and the readings are recorded on the order so you can see the before and after.

Electrical is quoted as diagnostic time plus repair operations, and we are direct about why. A dead circuit can be a two minute fix at a corroded ring terminal or a two day harness trace through a ceiling, and no honest shop can tell which one it is from a phone description. Electrical reaches claims mainly through rodent damage, through a power surge or a pedestal fault that took out equipment, and through fire or heat damage from a failed connection. Rodent damage is covered under comprehensive on many RV policies but excluded or limited on others, and the difference is worth reading before assuming.
The documentation burden falls on scope. Rodent damage found in one compartment is almost never confined to it, and a carrier that approves a single harness section will get a supplement when the ceiling is opened. Frequently asked questions
Why do I get a shock when touching my RV while plugged in?
That is hot skin voltage and it should be treated as an emergency. It means the coach body is energized relative to earth, almost always because the equipment ground between the pedestal and the coach is open, or the supply has reverse polarity. There is no protective path to trip a breaker, so the fault stays hidden until someone completes the circuit through their body. Stop using the coach until it is diagnosed.
Why does my air conditioner run on the generator but not on shore power?
That pattern points at the automatic transfer switch. The switch selects between the two sources through relay contacts, and when the shore side contacts pit or burn, that leg loses capacity while the generator side still works normally. The other possibility is a pedestal or cordset problem on one leg. Testing output voltage on both legs under load while exercising the switch separates the two.
Why do my RV lights dim when the water pump runs?
That is voltage drop, usually in a shared ground path rather than in the light or the pump. When the pump draws current through a corroded ground connection, the voltage at everything sharing that ground sags. Measuring drop separately across the positive path and the ground path under load finds it quickly. Replacing the fixture, which is what usually gets tried first, changes nothing.
Can rodent chewed RV wiring be repaired or does it need replacing?
Both, depending on the run. Individual damaged sections are cut back to sound insulation and repaired with tinned marine grade conductor and adhesive lined heat shrink connectors, which is a permanent repair. Runs with damage in many places, or damage inside a bundle that cannot be reached, are replaced as a run. What we will not do is tape over compromised insulation, because that is how a chassis short starts.
Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping in my RV?
A GFCI trips when current on the hot and neutral do not match, meaning some current is finding another path. Common causes in an RV are moisture in an exterior outlet or a compartment device, a damaged conductor touching a chassis member, an appliance with internal leakage, or a neutral bonded in more than one place. It is a fault indicator, not a nuisance, and bypassing it removes real protection.
Do you work on 12V and 120V systems separately?
They are separate systems and get diagnosed separately, but they interact in ways that matter. Grounding and bonding is the main crossover point, and a bonding error can produce symptoms on both sides at once. When a complaint touches both, we test each system on its own first and then look at the shared ground and bonding arrangement, which is very often where the actual fault lives.
How do I know if my RV wiring can handle an accessory I want to add?
It comes down to conductor size, run length, and the current the accessory draws, since voltage drop on a 12V circuit rises with both current and distance. Tapping an existing circuit is the usual mistake, because the original conductor was sized for its original load. New accessories get their own conductor sized for the run, fused at the source at a rating the conductor can carry, and routed with abrasion protection.
Can you find an intermittent electrical fault?
Yes, though it takes time and that is billed as diagnostic time rather than hidden in a repair line. Intermittents are found by loading the circuit and manipulating the harness while measuring, by thermal imaging a panel under load to find resistive terminations, and by circuit tracing with a tone generator.
