What belongs in this category
This category covers vans in three states: empty commercial vans, vans that have been converted for living or working, and cutaway based high cube vans where a separate box body sits behind a van cab. What they share is a unibody or semi unibody shell doing structural work, tight modern parts control, and body geometry that is unforgiving because everything is tied together.
It differs from the RV category in ownership and paperwork more than in metal. A Class B is a factory motorhome, registered as one, with RV specific parts and an RV insurance product behind it. An aftermarket conversion is still a van on paper, insured as a van unless the owner arranged otherwise, and the conversion itself is frequently invisible to the policy. That distinction becomes very expensive after a loss, and it is the single most common paperwork mistake we see on this platform.
It differs from the commercial truck category in that a truck body is a separate structure bolted to a frame. Damage a box truck body and the chassis is untouched. Damage a van sidewall and you have moved something that the roof, the floor and the door apertures all depend on.

Extended length cargo vans

Standard roof variants used where garage or structure height is a constraint. Same shells and same repair approach as their high roof siblings, with the difference that roof damage on a low roof van is more often canopy and overhead contact than tree and branch contact.
Armored vans
Vans with added protective material and glazing, carrying far more mass than the base vehicle was designed around. Suspension, mounting and structural fatigue dominate, and any repair has to account for the added weight rather than treating the van as a standard shell.

Curtain side vans

Vans are the easiest large vehicle we work on and the hardest small one, and both halves of that come from the same source: they are big enough to be awkward and modern enough to be tightly engineered.
Body geometry is the first shared constraint. Because the shell is the structure, damage anywhere in it can pull a door aperture out of square, and a van whose sliding door will not close properly after a repair is a failed repair regardless of how the paint looks. Measurement before and after is standard on anything beyond a bolt on panel.
Height is the second. High roof vans are tall enough that roof and upper body work needs proper access rather than a stepladder, and tall enough to make rooftop equipment, solar and vent damage a routine finding. Check the title and the manufacturer. If an RV manufacturer built it and it is registered as a motorhome, it is a Class B and the RV category covers it. If it is a cargo van that was converted afterwards, by a company or by you, it is a van conversion and it lives in this category. The distinction is not cosmetic: it changes the parts channel, the paperwork and how your insurer values the vehicle after a loss.
Why does van damage affect the doors so often?

Because the shell is the structure. There is no separate frame absorbing the impact, so a hit anywhere in the body can move a door aperture out of square, and a sliding door is unforgiving about that. A van whose side door binds or will not latch after a repair has not been repaired properly, no matter how good the paint looks. Do modern vans need sensor calibration after body work?

Increasingly yes. Current Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster vans carry cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors mounted in bumpers, mirrors, the windshield and sometimes the rear doors. Removing or replacing any panel that carries or supports that hardware changes the aim of the sensor. We identify which sensors are affected during the estimate and include calibration in scope rather than adding it at the end.
Can you repair a van with a conversion still inside it?

Usually, though how much comes out depends on where the damage is. A bolt on exterior panel often needs nothing removed. A sidewall repair means taking out cabinetry, wall panel and insulation in the affected area, and a roof repair means dealing with whatever is mounted up there. Do you work on high cube vans with a separate box body?

Yes, and they have their own page because the cab and the box are effectively two vehicles aging on different schedules. The cab is a normal van repair. The box is a panel and structure repair much closer to a box truck body, with its own roll door, its own roof and its own seams.
