The Transit is the highest volume commercial van on the road in this region, and its body panels, lamps, glass and hardware move through both the Ford dealer network and a mature aftermarket. A Transit rarely waits on a part. How this platform is built

The current generation Transit arrived for 2015 and has been revised repeatedly since, most substantially in 2020 and again in 2023. Series designations run T-150, T-250, T-350 and T-350 HD, with single and dual rear wheel options at the top of the range and gross weight ratings that span a wide band. Cargo van, crew van, passenger wagon, cab chassis and cutaway are all sold off the same architecture, which is why Transit shows up in fleets, in campers, and under box bodies all at once.

Chassis and running gear

Transit is rear wheel drive with an available all wheel drive system, so there is a driveshaft under the floor and a live rear axle behind it. Wheelbases are 130 and 148 inches, with a 148 extended body that pushes overall length past 21 feet 6 inches. Dual rear wheel T-350 HD models add fender flares and a wider track, which changes the rear quarter panel and the wheel opening trim entirely.

Because the platform spans so many gross weight ratings, suspension components and rear frame extensions differ across otherwise similar looking vans. We read the door jamb label before ordering anything that mounts to the rear frame.

Body construction

The body is a steel unibody and the three roof heights are factory built, not aftermarket caps. Low roof gives roughly 57 inches of interior height, medium roof about 72 inches, and high roof about 81 inches on the extended body. Each roof height uses its own roof stamping, its own upper side aperture and its own pillar extensions, joined at factory seams that sit in different places on each variant.

That is why roof height dictates repair method on this platform. A strike near the roof rail on a low roof lands on plain aperture steel. The same strike on a high roof lands on or near a factory joint between the base body and the tall upper structure, and that joint has to be evaluated separately from the skin damage over it.

Where the body meets the upfit

Ford publishes body builder guidance defining attachment points, prohibited drilling zones and frame modification limits for cutaway and cab chassis Transits. Shelving companies, camper builders and box body manufacturers all work to it. On a cutaway the rear frame rails carry the body directly through mounts, and on a cargo van the floor and lower side rails carry the interior fitout.

Fleet vans arrive with racking that has been in place for years. When we repair a strike side wall on a shelved van, we inspect every rack attachment on that side, because a rack that shifted under impact will have elongated its own mounting holes even when the shelf itself looks straight.

The damage patterns specific to this platform

Transit sees enormous mileage in delivery and trade service, and its damage pattern reflects a vehicle that is loaded, unloaded and reversed dozens of times a day.

Rear door and rear step damage

The rear doors get opened at every stop, often against wind, and the rear step and lower door edges take handcart and pallet contact. We see bent lower hinges, doors that no longer sit flush at the center gap, damaged rear step assemblies and rear aperture corners deformed by loading equipment. On a fleet van this is cumulative rather than a single event, which affects how a claim gets written.

Roof height mismatch strikes

Drivers who move between low roof and medium roof Transits in the same fleet hit things. A medium roof clears a standard parking structure and a high roof does not, and the resulting strike lands on the leading roof edge and the upper windshield frame. The tell is a crease that runs across the roof just behind the cant rail while the windshield glass is untouched.

Sliding door track and lower roller

Transit sliding doors take abuse from curbside loading and from being slammed shut on partially loaded shelves. The lower roller arm and its track collect grit, and a side hit anywhere near the door opening changes track alignment. Symptoms are a door that binds partway, a door that needs two pulls, or a door that closes but shows a wide gap at the top rear corner.

Dual rear wheel flare and quarter damage

T-350 HD dual rear wheel vans have wider rear track and bolt on flares that stand proud of the body line. They contact everything: dock bumpers, curbs, gate posts and other vehicles in tight yards. The flare is a cheap part, but the mounting holes tear the quarter panel behind it, so a flare replacement without inspecting the panel underneath is a repair that fails again.

Cutaway body mount and cab gap issues

Cutaway Transits under box bodies and camper shells show the same cab to body gap symptoms as any cutaway, but they arrive with more miles on them because the platform is used hard. Loose mounts, fatigued rear frame extensions and a torn flexible seal at the cab rear are the usual findings.

Most cosmetic Transit jobs are limited by paint and cure time, not by parts.

The exception is the tall upper structure on high roof vans and anything specific to dual rear wheel HD models. Those are lower volume, they ship as freight, and they are the parts most likely to add a week. My Transit rear doors will not close flush at the center. What is wrong?

Almost always the lower hinge or the aperture, not the doors. Rear doors on a delivery Transit are cycled hundreds of times a week and loaded against, so hinges wear and the lower aperture corners deform under handcart contact. Correcting it means measuring the opening, addressing any aperture deformation, then replacing hinge hardware. Adjusting strikers to chase the gap hides the problem for a few weeks.

Can a high roof Transit roof be repaired without replacing the whole roof?

Often yes, but the factory joint has to be evaluated first. The tall upper structure is joined to the base body at seams that a low roof van does not have. If the strike sits on plain roof skin away from those seams, sectioning or skin repair is realistic. If it sits on or near a joint, the joint condition governs the method, and that inspection happens before we commit to an approach.

Do you repair Transit cutaways with box bodies or camper shells on them?

Yes, and we treat the chassis and the body as two jobs that meet at the mounts. Cutaway work follows Ford body builder limits on rear frame modification, and the cab to body interface is inspected for mount condition before any sealing work is done. If the box is from a separate manufacturer, we source box parts through that manufacturer rather than through Ford.

Can you handle several fleet Transits without taking them all off the road at once?
