Powered steps and lift gates are unglamorous safety hardware that people rely on without thinking about, which is exactly why they fail without warning. Both carry live load through pivots, both cycle thousands of times, and both are mounted to the outside of a vehicle where they take road spray, salt, and impact.

The common failure logic is worth stating plainly. A pivot that develops play changes the geometry of the mechanism. Changed geometry loads the motor or cylinder harder. The motor or cylinder then fails, and it gets replaced, and the play is still there. That is why every job here starts at the pivots and the mounting, not at the electrical component that stopped working.

Damage and failure modes we see

Steps and gates fail on duty cycle rather than on a calendar, which is why a two year old fleet truck can be in worse condition than a ten year old motorhome. These are the patterns.

Linkage bushing and pivot wear on electric entry steps

A Kwikee style step folds through a four bar linkage with bushings at every pivot. Those bushings wear, the pivots develop play, and the step begins to rattle when deployed and sag at the outer edge. That play also means the gear motor no longer stops the step in the same place each time.

The consequence is progressive. A step with slop is not square to its opening, so it starts contacting the body or the door on retraction, which loads the motor. The motor draws more current, the gear teeth take more shock, and eventually the nylon gear inside the gearbox strips. Owners describe a step that suddenly quit; the actual failure started as a rattle a year earlier.

Step motor, gearbox, and controller faults

Step gear motors sit inches off the pavement and take direct road spray. Water gets past the case seal, the brushes and commutator corrode, and the motor either draws heavily or stops. Gearboxes strip when the linkage binds. Controllers fail from the same water exposure and from voltage spikes.

The diagnostic trap is that a dead step is usually blamed on the motor when the cause is a door switch, an ignition interlock, or a corroded ground. A step that deploys but will not retract with the door closed is almost always a switch or interlock issue, not a motor. Driving with a step deployed catches curbs and tears the assembly off the coach, which is why this fault should not wait.

Lift gate hydraulic cylinder and hose failures

Gate cylinders work in a filthy environment and the rods pit. A pitted rod cuts the seal, the cylinder starts weeping, and the platform begins drifting down under its own weight when parked. On a two cylinder gate, one bypassing cylinder makes the platform tilt as it rises, which is both a load hazard and a fast way to bend the platform.

Hoses chafe where they route across the frame and fail suddenly rather than gradually, usually under load, which drops the platform. Fluid condition matters as much as the components: water in the reservoir corrodes valve bodies and freezes, and dirty fluid wears the pump. A gate that has been topped up repeatedly without anyone asking where the fluid went is a gate about to strand a route.

Platform hinge pin, wear pad, and cart stop wear

The platform hinge carries the entire rated load in shear through a small number of pins. Pins wear oval, bushings wear out, and the platform develops fore and aft play. On rail gates, the wear pads that guide the carriage in the uprights wear thin and let the carriage rock, which binds the lift and puts side load into the cylinders.

Symptoms are a platform that no longer sits flush with the bed when stowed, a gate that shudders or chatters during travel, and a cart stop that no longer latches upright. The consequence is not just wear. A platform with significant hinge play does not hold level under a loaded pallet jack, and that is how loads and operators come off gates.

Torsion spring and stow assist failures

Many gates use torsion springs to assist folding the platform and to hold it stowed. Springs fatigue and break, and once one side breaks the platform becomes far heavier to handle and the remaining spring takes double the load and follows shortly after.

The symptom is a platform that suddenly requires two people to fold, or one that will not stay stowed and rides against its latch. Because a broken torsion assembly stores energy in whatever is left of it, disassembly follows a specific sequence. Continuing to run a gate with a broken spring bends the fold hinge and distorts the platform.

Power feed, ground, and solenoid problems on gates and lifts

Lift gates draw very heavy current, often hundreds of amps at the start of a lift, through long cable runs from the chassis battery to a pump at the rear of the vehicle. Those cables corrode at the lugs, chafe on the frame, and lose capacity slowly. The result is a gate that lifts an empty platform fine and stalls under load, which owners read as a weak pump.

The other classic is a start solenoid with pitted contacts, producing a loud click and no motor. Grounds are the third: a gate pump grounded to a painted or corroded frame point will behave exactly like a failing motor. Measuring voltage drop across the feed and ground under load is what separates these in a few minutes, and it is why we do not sell pumps on symptoms alone.

How we perform this repair

Steps and gates get tested under load, because a mechanism that behaves at zero load tells you almost nothing about the one that failed with a pallet on it.

The process, start to finish:

  1. Identify the unit and pull the specification. Manufacturer, model, capacity rating, and serial come off the data plate. Kwikee, Lippert, Maxon, Tommy Gate, Anthony, Waltco, Braun, and Ricon each have their own service procedure, torque values, and adjustment sequences, and capacity rating drives the load test later.
  2. Inspect the mounting and the structure first. On steps that means the mounting bracket and the frame or body it bolts to. On gates it means the entire subframe, the mounting plates, and the weld or bolt pattern to the chassis. Cracked welds and elongated bolt holes are found here or they are found later at a much worse moment.
  3. Measure pivots and play before energizing. Every hinge pin, bushing, linkage joint, and wear pad is checked for wear with the mechanism unloaded and then levered. Play measured here is what predicts the electrical failure, and it gets corrected as part of the repair rather than noted for later.
  4. Test the electrical feed under load. A clamp meter and a voltage drop measurement across the positive feed and the ground while the unit is cycling under load separates a tired cable or corroded lug from a failing motor. Start solenoids are checked for contact resistance rather than for clicking. On steps, the door switch, ignition interlock, and controller are tested in sequence before the motor is condemned.
  5. Service the hydraulics properly. Cylinder rods are inspected for pitting and straightness, cylinders resealed only where the rod is sound and replaced where it is not. Hoses are replaced at any chafe point rather than at the leak. Fluid is checked for water and particulate, and the system is flushed and refilled with the specified fluid rather than topped up.
  6. Replace mechanical wear items as sets. Hinge pins and bushings go in as sets so the platform sits square. Wear pads are replaced on all guides at once. Torsion springs are replaced in pairs, released and installed in the manufacturer sequence. Step linkages get all bushings renewed rather than only the worst one.
  7. Load test, adjust, and document. Gates are cycled under a load appropriate to their rating with platform level checked at height, and stow position, cart stop function, and platform to bed alignment are adjusted. Steps are cycled through the full door and ignition interlock logic. Cycle counts, current readings, and the completed adjustments go on the repair order.

Why did my RV electric step stop working?

Start with the switches, not the motor. Most dead steps are a failed door switch, an ignition interlock, a corroded ground, or a controller that has taken water, and the motor is fine. A step that deploys but will not retract with the door closed is almost certainly a switch or interlock fault. We test the control logic in sequence before condemning a gear motor.

My RV step rattles and sags. Does that need fixing now?

Yes, because the rattle is the early stage of the failure that strands the step. Play in the linkage bushings means the step is no longer square to its opening, so it contacts the body on retraction, the motor works harder, and the gearbox eventually strips. Replacing all the bushings while the motor is still good is a fraction of the work of doing it after the gearbox fails.

Why does my lift gate lift an empty platform but stall under load?

That pattern points at the electrical feed rather than the pump. Lift gates draw very heavy current through long cable runs, and a corroded lug, a chafed cable, or a poor ground creates a voltage drop that only shows up under load. Measuring voltage drop across the feed and ground while the gate is lifting identifies it in minutes and frequently saves a pump replacement that was never needed.

Why does my lift gate platform drift down when parked?

Hydraulic fluid is bypassing, either past a cylinder rod seal or through a valve that is not holding. Rod pitting from road grit is the most common root cause. On a two cylinder gate, one bypassing cylinder also makes the platform tilt as it lifts, which is a load hazard. A cylinder with a pitted rod gets replaced rather than resealed, because a new seal on a scored rod fails quickly.

How often should a commercial lift gate be serviced?

Service by cycle count rather than by calendar, since a delivery truck can put more cycles on a gate in a month than an occasional user puts on in a year. At minimum, inspect hinge pins, wear pads, hoses, fluid condition, and cable and lug condition on a regular interval, and load test after any component replacement. Gates that carry people, such as accessibility lifts, have their own inspection requirements.

Can a bent lift gate platform be repaired?

Often yes, depending on where the deformation is. A platform bent at the outer edge from a curb strike can usually be straightened and reinforced. A platform bent at the fold hinge or with cracked welds at the hinge ears is a different matter, because that is where rated load passes through. We measure platform flatness and check the hinge geometry before deciding, and we do not straighten a hinge area that has cracked.

Yes, and on a gate with an aging subframe, worn uprights, and tired hydraulics it is frequently the better number. Replacement involves confirming the capacity rating against the intended load, verifying the chassis can carry the mounting loads, fabricating or modifying the subframe as required, and running the power feed at a cable size that supports the pump.
