A door is a moving structural panel hung in an opening that flexes. On an RV, that opening is part of a body that twists on every uneven driveway, which is why RV doors go out of adjustment in ways house doors never do. Most complaints we get, meaning a door that will not latch, a door that leaks, a compartment that pops open on the road, come down to geometry rather than hardware.

That is why we measure before we replace parts. A latch that will not engage is very often a frame that has racked a few millimeters, and installing a new latch into a bad opening produces a door that still will not latch, plus an invoice. We check the diagonals, the reveal gap around the leaf, and the seal compression before anything gets ordered.

Damage and failure modes we see

Doors fail in a small number of very repeatable ways. What varies is which part shows the symptom, which is usually not the part that failed.

Racked door frames from chassis and body flex

The entry door opening is a hole cut in a structural sidewall, and it is the weakest point in that wall by definition. Parking on a crown, leveling with one jack loaded harder than the others, or towing a fifth wheel that flexes at the pin all put a shear load through that opening. Over years the frame goes out of square, usually a few millimeters across the diagonal.

The symptoms arrive in a predictable order: the door starts needing a shove to latch, then the seal stops compressing at one corner and the door whistles at highway speed, then water appears at the threshold. Owners replace the latch, then the seal, then the striker, and none of it works because the opening is the problem. We measure both diagonals and the reveal at eight points before touching hardware.

Delaminated and rotted entry door cores

A typical RV entry door is a sandwich: an outer aluminum or fiberglass skin, a foam or lauan core, an inner skin, and an extruded perimeter frame holding it together. Water gets in around the window frame, the lock cylinder, or the lower corner of the perimeter extrusion, and the core saturates.

The first sign is a door that has gotten heavier and sags on its hinges, followed by a visible bulge or ripple in the outer skin. A wet core also means the hinge screws are now threading into soft material, which is why sagging accelerates rapidly once it starts. A door in this condition cannot be adjusted straight; the leaf itself is no longer flat and it gets rebuilt or replaced.

Piano hinge tear-out on baggage and pass-through doors

Large pass-through compartment doors on fifth wheels and diesel pushers hang from a continuous piano hinge riveted or screwed along the top edge. That hinge carries the full weight of the door in shear at every rivet, and the door gets levered against it every time someone leans on it while loading.

Failure starts at one or two rivets near an end, and once those elongate their holes the load transfers to the neighbors and the tear-out zippers along the edge. The visible symptom is a compartment door that no longer sits flush at one corner and drags on the frame. Left alone, the hinge separates on the road at highway speed with the door still latched at the bottom, which bends the door beyond repair and gouges the sidewall.

Gas strut fade and mounting point failure

Gas struts hold compartment doors and hatch lids open using compressed nitrogen behind a piston. They lose pressure gradually through the rod seal, and a strut at the end of its service life will hold an unloaded door but drop it when the wind catches it. The rate of fade accelerates with heat cycling and with any pitting on the rod, which is why struts on the sunny side of a coach die first.

The other failure is the mount. Ball studs thread into thin sheet or into a nut plate riveted to the door skin, and repeatedly slamming a door with a tired strut works those mounts loose until they pull through. Replacing a strut into a pulled mount just tears the mount out again, so the mounting point gets repaired or backed with a plate first. Sizing matters too: struts are rated in newtons and the correct rating depends on door weight and the geometry of the mounting arm, not on what the parts counter had in stock.

Latch, lock, and striker wear

Trimark and Bauer entry latch assemblies wear at the rotary catch and at the paddle linkage, and the wear is accelerated by a door that has to be pushed hard to close. Compartment slam latches and compression latches wear at the cam. The symptom is a latch that engages only on the second pull, a deadbolt that binds, or a paddle that stays depressed.

Key cylinder failures are separate and common on older units, particularly where the same generic key code was used across a whole model line. When we replace an entry latch we set the striker position off the actual closed reveal rather than the old screw holes, since the old position is usually part of why the latch wore out.

Seal compression loss and the rattle it produces

Bulb and D-seals work by compressing to roughly half their free height when the door is closed. Ultraviolet exposure and heat cycling take a permanent set, and once the seal no longer springs back the door has slop in the closed position. That slop is what produces the drumming and rattling owners describe at highway speed, and it also lets road dust into the coach.

A simple diagnostic we run: close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the perimeter and pull. Even resistance all the way around means the seal and geometry are right. Zero resistance at one corner and heavy drag at the opposite corner is the classic racked frame signature, not a bad seal.

How we perform this repair

The order is always geometry first, hardware second, seal last. Reversing that order is how a door ends up with three new parts and the same complaint.

The process, start to finish:

  1. Measure the opening and the leaf. Both diagonals of the frame, the reveal gap at eight points around the leaf, and the leaf itself checked for flatness against a straightedge. This tells us whether we are fixing a door, a frame, or both, and it goes in the estimate before parts are quoted.
  2. Run the paper pull test around the perimeter. Even resistance means seal compression is uniform. A pattern of drag at one corner and slack at the diagonal opposite is a racked opening and gets corrected structurally before any hardware decision.
  3. Correct the frame. Depending on the platform this means re-anchoring the frame to the wall studs, adding backing where fasteners have pulled through soft or rotted material, shimming the hinge side, or replacing the extruded frame entirely. Rot found behind the frame flange gets addressed as structural work before the frame goes back.
  4. Rebuild or replace the leaf. Delaminated cores are opened, the wet core removed, new core material bonded with a structural adhesive, and the perimeter extrusion resealed. Where the skin has creased or the extrusion is bent, a replacement leaf is the right call and we say so rather than chasing it.
  5. Re-hang on sound hinge material. Torn out piano hinges are replaced with continuous stainless hinge stock through a backing plate, not re-riveted into elongated holes. Butt hinges get their screw holes plugged and re-drilled so the fastener bites fresh material. Hinge pins and bushings get replaced rather than reused.
  6. Fit hardware and set the striker. Latch assemblies go in, then the striker or keeper is positioned off the measured closed reveal so the rotary catch engages at its designed depth. Gas struts are selected by rated force for the actual door weight and mounting geometry, and mounting points are reinforced with a backing plate where the original pulled through.
  7. Replace the seal and verify. New bulb or D-seal of the correct free height goes on last, followed by a repeat of the paper pull test at the same eight points and a hose test on entry doors and any compartment that houses electrical or plumbing components.

What this costs and how we quote it

Door work is quoted per opening, because that is the unit of labor. A single compartment door with a torn hinge and a tired strut is a straightforward operation. An entry door with a racked frame, a wet core, and rot behind the frame flange is three separate scopes stacked into one opening, and the estimate reflects that rather than a single door line item.

What we will not do is quote a latch replacement over the phone for a door that will not latch, because in our experience most of those are geometry. The measurement pass is part of the paid systems estimate, and it produces a written finding with the diagonal numbers on it so you can see why the recommendation is what it is. Doors show up on claims two ways. Either something hit the door, which is a collision or comprehensive loss depending on what hit it, or the door departed at speed because a hinge failed, which usually is not covered because it is wear. The distinction matters and adjusters look closely at hinge condition on this specific claim type.

Where a door is on a claim, the argument is nearly always repair versus replace on the leaf. A leaf with a creased skin and a compromised perimeter extrusion is not economically repairable even when it looks fixable in a photograph, and that position has to be documented with measurements rather than asserted. Frequently asked questions

Why will my RV entry door not latch without slamming it?

In most cases the door frame has racked out of square rather than the latch having failed. Body flex from uneven parking and jacking pushes the opening a few millimeters off across the diagonal, which moves the striker relative to the rotary catch. Measuring both diagonals and the reveal gap around the leaf identifies this in a few minutes. Replacing the latch on a racked frame does not fix it.

Can a delaminated RV entry door be repaired or does it need replacing?

It depends on whether the perimeter extrusion and skins are still straight. If the frame is true and only the core is wet, we can open the leaf, remove the saturated core, bond in new core material, and reseal the perimeter. If the outer skin has rippled permanently or the extrusion is bent, the leaf gets replaced, because a door that is no longer flat cannot be adjusted to seal.

How do you size a replacement gas strut for a compartment door?

By the weight of the door and the geometry of the mount, not by matching the old part number. Struts are rated in newtons of extended force, and the correct rating is calculated from door mass, the distance from the hinge to the strut mounting point, and the angle the strut works through. A strut that is too strong tears out the mount; too weak and the door drops in a gust.

My baggage door hinge is tearing out. Can it just be re-riveted?

Not into the same holes. Once rivet holes have elongated, re-riveting puts the new fastener into oversized material and it fails again within months. We replace the section with continuous stainless hinge stock pulled through a backing plate so the load spreads across the door edge instead of concentrating at individual rivets. The door skin itself often needs a doubler where the original tore.

Why does my RV door rattle and whistle at highway speed?

The seal has taken a compression set and is no longer holding the leaf tight in the closed position. Bulb and D-seals are designed to compress to about half their free height; once ultraviolet exposure hardens them they stop springing back and the door has slop. A paper pull test around the perimeter confirms it. If the slack is only at one corner, the frame is racked and the seal is a symptom.

Can you rekey RV compartment locks so they all match?

Yes, and it is a common request because many manufacturers used a single generic key code across an entire model line, meaning your compartment key opens a lot of other coaches. We replace cylinders across the compartment doors to a common code and can key the entry latch separately. It is done at the same time as any latch or hardware work so the doors only come apart once.

Do you repair toy hauler ramp doors?

Yes. A ramp door is a structural door with load paths no other RV door has: cable or spring assist, heavy piano hinges at the bottom, seal compression across a very long perimeter, and latching hardware that has to hold against a door that doubles as a patio. We repair hinge tear-out, correct frame geometry, replace cables and seals, and rebuild the latch and keeper hardware.

How long does an RV door repair take?

Hardware and seal work is typically a one to two day job. Re-hanging a door on new hinge stock with backing plates usually runs the same. What extends it is a frame that has to come out of the sidewall or a leaf that has to be sourced, since replacement leaves are model specific and often on lead time.
