The boundary against every RV platform is intent. An RV is a living space that has to stay weathertight and look right. A cargo trailer is a tool that has to keep working, and the right repair is usually the one that restores capacity and function at the lowest sensible cost, not the one that makes it look new.

How this platform is built
Cargo trailers are the simplest vehicles we work on and the most consistently overloaded. That combination is why their failure list is short, predictable, and almost entirely about fasteners and load paths.
The chassis
A welded steel frame with two main rails, crossmembers on 16 or 24 inch centers, and a welded A-frame tongue with a coupler and jack. Axles are Dexter or a comparable supplier on leaf springs, in 3,500 pound single and tandem configurations up to 7,000 pounds per axle on heavy trailers. Brakes are electric drum on anything rated over about 3,000 pounds.
Crossmember spacing is the number that decides how the trailer ages. A 24 inch spacing under a plywood deck carrying a pallet jack or a wheeled machine deflects between the members with every pass, which is what eventually breaks the deck down. Heavier trailers use 16 inch spacing for exactly that reason.
Body construction method
Enclosed cargo trailers use vertical wall posts, steel or aluminum tube, on 16 or 24 inch centers, tied to the frame at the bottom and to formed roof bows at the top. The exterior skin is thin aluminum, usually 0.024 to 0.030, screwed or riveted to the posts, and the interior often has a plywood or composite liner. The roof is a one-piece aluminum sheet stretched over the bows and captured in a J-rail along each side with butyl tape at the seam.
The floor is 3/4 inch plywood over the crossmembers, sometimes with a coated or laminated wear surface. The rear closure is either barn doors or a ramp door with spring assist, and the front on many models is a V-nose formed from two skin panels meeting at a vertical seam.
The chassis-to-habitation joint
There is no habitation, and that simplifies things enormously. The wall posts land on the frame and are fastened there, and the floor sits on the crossmembers. The load path is direct: cargo to floor, floor to crossmembers, crossmembers to main rails, main rails to axles.
The joint that actually matters is the post-to-roof-bow connection at the top of each wall. That is what keeps the box from spreading, and it is fastened with rivets or screws through thin material. When a load shifts and hits a sidewall, or when the trailer has been chronically overloaded and the frame has taken a set, that joint works loose. The skin then oil-cans, the roof seam opens at the J-rail, and the trailer starts leaking along the top edge. Almost every enclosed trailer failure we see runs through that connection.
The damage patterns specific to this platform
Cargo trailer damage comes from load, not from weather or from collision. The list is short because these vehicles only have a handful of things that can go wrong.
Ramp door spring tension loss and cable fray
A ramp door is heavy and the spring assist is set for its original weight. Springs lose tension, cables fray at the drum and at the pulley, and the door slowly becomes a two-person lift. Owners keep using it, which puts the full door weight into the hinge line every cycle, and the hinge fasteners then elongate their holes in the rear frame member. What starts as a spring adjustment becomes a hinge and frame repair if it is left alone.
Wall post separation and skin oil canning
Screws holding skin to posts back out under vibration, and rivets shear. The skin loses its attachment over a run of posts and starts to oil can visibly, which owners read as cosmetic. It is not: the skin contributes shear stiffness to the wall, and a wall whose skin has come loose flexes more, which loosens more fasteners. The post-to-roof-bow joint is usually working loose at the same time.
Floor rot from load abrasion
The failure sequence is always the same. A wheeled load, a pallet, or a dropped tool wears through the plywood surface or its coating in a traffic lane. Water tracked in on tires or blown in at the door sits in the exposed wood. The plywood delaminates from the top down, the deck softens, and the crossmembers underneath begin to corrode because the wet wood holds moisture against them. Deck failure is the most common significant repair on this platform.
Roof seam separation at the J-rail
The roof sheet is captured in a J-rail along each side over butyl tape. Load shifts that strike the wall from inside, box flex from a loosened post connection, and years of thermal cycling all work that seam. Once it opens, water runs down the inside of the wall skin and into the floor edge, which accelerates the deck failure that was probably already starting. A wet line along the wall-to-floor junction inside is the usual first symptom.
Axle and frame damage from routine overloading
Cargo trailers get loaded to whatever fits rather than to what they are rated for. The results are bent axles that wear tires on the inside edges, flattened or broken leaf springs, and crossmember sag at the ramp threshold where the load crosses. A trailer that sits nose-high, wears tires unevenly, or has a visible dip in the deck near the rear is telling you it has been over its rating for a while.

The service pages describe the procedures. What changes on a working trailer is that function is the specification and cosmetics usually are not.
The work we most often write on a cargo or utility trailer, and what is different here:
- Door and compartment repair: ramp spring and cable service is the highest-value preventive repair on this platform because it stops a hinge and frame failure downstream.
- Frame and structural repair: restoring the post-to-roof-bow connection and the frame set from overloading is what actually returns capacity to the trailer.
- Water damage and subfloor repair: deck replacement here is a load-rated repair, so material and crossmember condition matter more than appearance.
- RV roof repair: a captured aluminum roof sheet in a J-rail is a completely different detail from a membrane RV roof and is resealed differently.
- Leveling and suspension: bent axles and flattened springs from overloading are routine on this platform, and correcting them is often the cheapest repair with the largest effect.
- Custom fabrication: interior racking, shelving, tie-down points, and reinforced thresholds are frequently fabricated to the way the trailer is actually used.
- Dent and bumper repair: on a working trailer we will tell you when a dent should be left alone, because skin panel replacement rarely pays back on a trailer that hauls equipment.
- Decals graphics and wraps: business trailers carry livery, and matching graphics after a panel repair is often the only cosmetic item that matters.
Parts sourcing and lead times
Cargo trailers have the fastest parts channel of anything we service, and it is not close. Trailer supply distributors stock everything: skin coil in standard widths and common colors, wall post and roof bow stock, J-rail, ramp door hardware, springs, cables, hinges, latches, seals, Dexter axles and brake assemblies, couplers, jacks, and lighting. Most of it is generic across brands, most of it is cheap, and most of it is on a shelf within a day.
That reality changes the repair strategy on this platform. Where an RV repair is often shaped by what parts exist, a cargo trailer repair is shaped purely by what makes economic sense, because the parts are always available. Full deck replacement, full skin panel replacement, and complete ramp hardware rebuilds are all realistic options rather than last resorts, and the decision comes down to the trailer's remaining working life rather than to lead time.

Insurance considerations for this platform
Cargo trailer claims are usually commercial claims, and the two things that decide them are whether the damage is an event or accumulated overload wear, and whether the trailer was scheduled on the policy correctly. Bent axles, sagged crossmembers, and worn decks read as wear and are frequently excluded.
Downtime is the other issue. A trailer that is part of how a business runs has a replacement cost while it is out of service, and whether that is covered depends on the policy. Bringing yours to us from Brea
Cargo trailers are the simplest arrival we handle. Enclosed trailers run 6 to 8.5 feet wide, 10 to 30 feet long, and 7 to 11 feet tall, all well inside our bay clearance, and our lot has room to drop and go. The tow from Brea to our Yorba Linda shop takes a few minutes.
Empty it completely before you come. We cannot assess a deck, a crossmember, a wall post, or a ramp hinge with cargo on top of them, and we cannot store the contents. If the ramp will not close, tell us at booking so the trailer goes somewhere it can be secured. We are in shop only, with no mobile service, no roadside service, and no fleet route service, so trailers come to us rather than the other way around.
Frequently asked questions
My ramp door is getting heavy. Is that just the springs?
It usually starts there and does not stay there. Spring assists lose tension and cables fray at the drum and pulley, so the door gets heavier. The problem is what happens next: every cycle puts the full door weight into the hinge line, which elongates the fastener holes in the rear frame member. Servicing springs and cables early is the cheapest repair on this platform and it prevents a much larger one.
The sides of my trailer look wavy. Does it matter?
Yes, more than it looks. Oil canning means the skin has lost attachment to the wall posts, and the skin contributes shear stiffness to the wall. A wall whose skin has come loose flexes more, which loosens more fasteners and typically works the post-to-roof-bow joint loose at the same time. That is the connection that keeps the box from spreading, so wavy sides are usually reporting a structural problem.
Can a rotted floor be patched or does the whole deck come out?
Both are legitimate and it depends on how it failed. Rot from a single wear-through in one traffic lane can be repaired locally if the crossmembers are sound. Rot in several separated areas usually means the whole deck has been wet repeatedly and full replacement is the better value. On this platform full deck replacement is realistic rather than drastic, because materials are cheap and immediately available.
Water is running down the inside of my wall. Where is it from?
Almost always the roof seam at the J-rail. A cargo trailer roof is a one-piece aluminum sheet captured in a rail along each side over butyl tape, and box flex, interior load strikes, and thermal cycling work that seam open. Water then runs down the inside of the wall skin and into the floor edge, which accelerates deck rot. Fixing the seam early usually saves the deck.
Do you fix cosmetic damage on work trailers?
We can, and we will often advise against it. On a trailer that hauls equipment, a dent in a skin panel has no effect on function and skin replacement rarely pays back. The exception is business livery: if graphics have to line up across a repaired panel, that is a real requirement and we handle it. We say plainly which repairs restore capacity and which are appearance only.
How can I tell if my trailer has been overloaded?
Look at three things. Tires wearing on the inside edges point to bent axles. A trailer that sits nose-high or has flattened, reverse-arched springs points to sustained overload. A visible dip in the deck near the ramp threshold points to crossmember sag where every load crosses. Any of the three means the trailer has been over its rating long enough to take a permanent set.
Are cargo trailer parts easy to get?
They are the easiest of anything we service. That means repair decisions on this platform are driven purely by economics rather than by what is available.

No. We are in shop only, with no mobile service, no roadside service, and no fleet route service, so trailers come to us. We can sequence multiple trailers from the same operator so that only one is out of service at a time, which is usually what fleet customers actually need. Scheduling that in advance works better than sending them all at once.
