What this repair covers

The defining characteristic here is that the repair is local. One dent, or a handful, on panels that are otherwise fine, with no load path to trace and no measurement to take. The panel gets returned to shape and either polished, spot refinished, or blended, and the vehicle leaves.

The second half of the page is bumper work, which is its own economics problem. A plastic bumper cover on a Sprinter, a Transit, or a Class B is repairable by plastic welding and adhesive, but only up to the point where repair hours plus refinish exceed the replacement part plus the same refinish. Damage and failure modes we see

Small dents come from a small number of repeatable causes, and the cause tells you immediately whether paintless removal is even on the table.

Door edge and cart strikes on aluminum siding

Cause: another vehicle door, a shopping cart, a dropped chock, a swinging compartment door. Aluminum siding on trailers is typically in the range of twenty four to thirty thousandths of an inch, which is thin enough to dent from contact that would not mark a car.

Symptom: a shallow round dent, sometimes with a bright scuff at the contact point, in the flat of a panel between rivet rows. The paint is usually intact because aluminum siding is coil coated and flexible.

Delay consequence: mostly cosmetic if the coating is unbroken, but a dent that broke the coating exposes bare aluminum, and bare aluminum against a steel fastener in coastal air corrodes galvanically. Small dents with broken coating should not sit for years.

Creased dents over a stud or rib

Cause: contact directly over a framing member. The panel cannot move inward because the stud is behind it, so the metal folds instead of dishing.

Symptom: a sharp line rather than a smooth depression, often with a visible stretch mark at the ends of the crease. Tapping either side of the crease gives the solid tick of a supported panel.

Delay consequence: the material in a crease is work-hardened and stretched, so it will never return to its original dimension by pushing alone. Attempting paintless removal on a crease over a stud typically cracks the coating and turns a spot repair into a panel refinish.

Plastic bumper cover gouging and tab fracture

Cause: parking contact, curb strikes, and backing into low obstacles. Modern covers are polypropylene or thermoplastic olefin, which is flexible enough to survive the impact and brittle enough at the mounting tabs to snap.

Symptom: a gouge or scuff on the face with the cover still in position, plus one or more broken mounting tabs behind it, which is why a cover that looks fine sits proud at one corner.

Delay consequence: a cover hanging on fewer tabs than it was designed for flexes at highway speed and progressively breaks the remaining ones. The face damage stays cosmetic. The mounting damage does not.

Steel bumper deflection from a hitch mounted load

Cause: a bike rack, a cargo carrier, or a generator hung off a rear bumper that was designed to hold a sewer hose. A rear bumper on a travel trailer is a light welded square tube, not a receiver.

Symptom: the bumper tube sagging or twisted along its length, welds cracked at the bumper to frame bracket, and often a visible downward bow in the rear of the trailer frame itself.

Delay consequence: this one crosses into structural territory fast. If the brackets cracked or the frame rail bowed, the job stops being bumper work and becomes frame work, and we check that before quoting a replacement tube.

Oil canning and rivet line puckering

Cause: thermal expansion of a large flat aluminum panel constrained by a fixed rivet row, or a panel that was over-tensioned at assembly. Not impact at all.

Symptom: a large shallow area that flexes with light hand pressure and pops between two stable positions, and a scalloped pucker between adjacent rivets along a seam.

Delay consequence: oil canning is a stiffness problem, not a dent, and it cannot be pushed out. Trying to do so stretches the panel and makes it permanently worse. The correct answers are adding backing support or accepting it, and we say which applies before touching the panel.

How we perform this repair

Dent work is decided at the panel with a light and a hand, and the decision about method is made before any tool touches the vehicle.

The sequence, start to finish:

  1. Read the dent under a line board. A striped reflection board across the panel shows depth, crease, and stretch far more accurately than a raking flashlight. This is where the four inch and quarter inch thresholds get applied for real.
  2. Check access and check behind. We determine whether a rear access path exists through a compartment, a vent, or a removed interior panel, and we tap the surrounding area to confirm the substrate behind the skin is sound rather than crushed.
  3. Paintless removal where the panel qualifies. Steel and aluminum rods and whale tails work the dent from behind in small increments, working the perimeter inward. Aluminum requires more heat and more patience than steel because it has less memory and work hardens faster.
  4. Glue pull where there is no rear access. A tab is bonded with hot melt, pulled with a slide hammer or lifter in controlled increments, and knocked down with a tap-down and a knockdown hammer between pulls to avoid creating a high crown.
  5. Fill and spot refinish where the finish is broken. If the coating fractured, the area is sanded to a feathered edge, treated with the correct primer for the substrate, filled thinly, and refinished with a blend into the adjacent area rather than a hard tape line.
  6. Plastic bumper repair. Substrate is identified from the recycling code molded on the back, typically polypropylene or thermoplastic olefin. Cracks are V-grooved from both sides, welded with a nitrogen hot air welder using matching rod, reinforced with fiberglass mesh and a two part adhesive on the back side, then contoured and refinished with a flex additive in the clear.
  7. Steel bumper and mount work. Tubes are straightened where the section is sound, replaced where it is not, and every bracket and weld between the bumper and the frame is inspected before the vehicle is released.

Does paintless dent removal work on RV aluminum siding?

Yes, with two caveats. Aluminum has far less shape memory than steel, so it takes more working passes and often controlled heat to relax the metal, and it work hardens faster, which limits how many attempts you get. The bigger constraint is access. A trailer sidewall has an interior finish panel, insulation, and a stud cage behind it, so the technician can only reach the dent if there is a compartment, a vent, or a removable panel nearby.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a plastic bumper cover?

It depends entirely on the repair hours, because refinish cost is identical either way. A scuff or a single clean crack usually repairs for less than the cover costs. A cover with multiple cracks, broken mounting tabs, and a torn section usually does not, and at that point replacement is both cheaper and better. Can a crease in an RV panel be pushed out?
