Everything hail hits, which on a recreational vehicle means the roof first and the vertical panels last. The distribution is not random. Hail arrives at an angle set by wind, so damage concentrates on horizontal surfaces and on the windward side, and a proper inspection finds far more damage up top than anyone standing on the ground would guess.

Damage and failure modes we see
Hail damages five different material systems on the same vehicle in the same minute, and each one shows the impact differently. An estimate that treats them all as dents misses most of the loss.
Membrane bruising over roof decking
Cause: a hail stone striking a rubber or thermoplastic roof membrane. The membrane is flexible and usually survives, so it transmits the energy straight through to the plywood or luan decking underneath.
Symptom: the membrane looks intact from a distance. Up close and in raking light there are shallow circular depressions where the decking beneath has crushed. Underfoot, those spots feel soft compared to the surrounding deck.
Delay consequence: the crushed decking no longer supports the membrane, so the membrane flexes at every impact point with wind and traffic. Flexing rubber over a depression eventually cracks, and then the crushed area becomes a wet area. This is the single most commonly missed component of an RV hail loss.
Dimpling on thin aluminum siding
Cause: hail on the sidewall of an aluminum-skinned trailer. At twenty four to thirty thousandths of an inch, that skin yields at impact energies a car panel shrugs off.
Symptom: dense, shallow, round dimples covering an entire panel, generally worse on the windward side and heaviest on the upper half. Individually each dimple is small. Collectively the panel reads as textured rather than dented.
Delay consequence: mostly cosmetic and mostly stable, but dimple density is what determines whether paintless removal is viable at all. Past a certain count per square foot the panel cannot be worked without stretching it, and the repair becomes replacement.
Star fracture in gelcoat
Cause: hail on a fiberglass cap or sidewall. Gelcoat is brittle and does not dent. It cracks.
Symptom: small radiating star cracks with no depression at all, usually invisible until the panel is wet or viewed at a low angle. On white gelcoat they can be nearly impossible to see in overhead light and obvious in raking light at dusk.
Delay consequence: every star crack is an open path into the laminate. Water enters, sits, and the whitened debonding zone around the crack spreads. Fiberglass hail damage that is not repaired turns into laminate repair, which costs several times as much.
Shattered rooftop plastics
Cause: hail on components molded from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or polycarbonate that have been exposed to years of ultraviolet light. Those plastics embrittle with age, and a shroud that was flexible when new is glass by year eight.
Symptom: cracked or holed air conditioner shrouds, split vent lids, spidered or shattered skylight domes, and broken antenna and satellite housings. Fragments often land inside the vent or on the roof surface.
Delay consequence: these are weather barriers. A cracked vent lid or a holed skylight dome is a direct water entry, and unlike a slow seal failure it lets in volume immediately. These get temporary covered at intake if the vehicle is going to sit.
Concentration on windward and horizontal surfaces
Cause: hail falls with a wind vector, so it strikes horizontal surfaces perpendicular and one vertical side at an angle. The other side of the vehicle can be untouched.
Symptom: heavy damage on the roof, the top of the front cap, the top of a cabover, awning toppers and rooftop equipment, moderate damage on one sidewall, and none on the opposite side. The transition is often sharp.
Delay consequence: this pattern is why ground level inspections undercount. If nobody put a ladder on the vehicle, the largest part of the loss was never seen, and once the claim is closed on that basis reopening it requires a supplement with evidence.
How we perform this repair
The mapping stage is the estimate. Everything downstream, including whether paintless removal is even feasible, comes out of the count.
The sequence, start to finish:
- Wash and stage the vehicle indoors. Hail dents are found by reflection, so the vehicle is washed and brought under controlled lighting. Dirt and outdoor light both hide small dents, and a count taken in a parking lot is not a count.
- Divide the vehicle into panels. Each roof section, cap, sidewall section, skirt, and rooftop component is identified as a discrete panel with a label. This panel schedule is what the matrix operates on, and it has to match how the carrier defines panels or the two estimates will never reconcile.
- Count and size every dent. Working panel by panel under a striped line board, dents are tallied into size categories, conventionally described by coin size from dime up through half dollar and larger. The counts are recorded per panel and photographed with the board reflection visible.
- Inspect the roof separately. The membrane is examined in raking light and the decking is checked by feel and by tap for crushed areas under each impact. Rooftop plastics are inspected individually since they fail at lower energy than anything else on the vehicle.
- Build the estimate on a matrix. The count and size per panel drive labor through the hail matrix, with uplifts applied for aluminum panels, oversize panels, and access difficulty. Where the density exceeds what paintless removal can address, that panel is written conventionally instead, with repair and refinish hours, and the two methods are reconciled in one document.
- Perform the repair by panel. Paintless technicians work each qualifying panel from behind with rods and from the face with glue pulls where there is no access. Panels written conventionally go through repair, filler, primer, and refinish with a proper blend into adjacent panels.
- Replace what does not repair. Shrouds, lids, domes, and housings are replaced rather than repaired. Membrane sections over crushed decking are opened, the decking is replaced, and the membrane is patched or re-covered depending on the extent.
