How this platform is built
School bus bodies are built by a small number of manufacturers to a common regulatory pattern, which is why they look alike and why a repair method that works on one usually transfers to another. The body is a skeletal steel structure skinned in sheet steel and joined with thousands of fasteners, and the strength of those joints is itself a regulated property.
Chassis and body type
Buses are classified by body type rather than by size alone. Type A is a body mounted on a cutaway van chassis. Type B has the body mounted on a stripped chassis with part of the engine ahead of the windshield. Type C is the familiar conventional with the engine fully ahead of the windshield and the entrance door behind the front wheels. Type D is the transit style flat front, with the engine forward, midship or rear and the entrance door ahead of the front wheels.

Body construction
