What this repair covers
RV glass splits into three very different jobs. Bonded glass is glued to the body with a structural urethane and is part of the vehicle structure. Gasket set glass floats in a rubber surround that holds it by compression and relies on a filler strip and sealant to stay watertight. Framed windows, meaning most Hehr and Kinro side units, are a complete assembly of glass, an aluminum or vinyl frame, and a butyl seal clamped through the sidewall.
Each type fails differently and each has a different reseal versus replace decision. A gasket set two piece Class A windshield can often be reset with a new gasket and filler strip. A bonded pane cannot be resealed at all once the urethane bond has released, because the failure is the bond itself. Knowing which you have is the first thing we determine, and it usually decides the entire cost of the job.

Damage and failure modes we see
Glass rarely fails on its own. Most of what we replace failed because of something the opening, the gasket, or the road did to it, and identifying that cause is what keeps the second pane from going the same way.
Stone chip propagation in laminated glass
A laminated windshield is two glass plies bonded to a polyvinyl butyral interlayer. A stone strike breaks the outer ply and leaves a cone shaped pit; the interlayer stops it from going through. What kills the pane is what happens next, because the pit becomes a stress concentrator and thermal cycling drives a crack out of it.
On an RV that crack runs faster than on a car for two reasons: the glass area is enormous, so the thermal gradient across it is larger, and the body flexes more, so the pane sees repeated bending load. A chip smaller than a quarter and outside the driver acuity zone can often be resin filled. Once a crack leaves the pit and reaches the edge of the glass, the pane is finished.
Gasket compression set and shrinkage on rubber mounted Class A glass
A gasket set windshield is held by the compression of a thick rubber surround with a locking filler strip pressed into its outer channel. Ultraviolet exposure and heat cycling harden that rubber and shrink it, most visibly at the corners where the gasket is molded rather than extruded.
The first symptom is water on the dash after rain, usually at a lower corner, and a chalky gray rubber surface that no longer springs back when you press it. Owners often try to fix it with a bead of silicone over the outside, which traps water against the pinch weld and starts corrosion on a steel opening or delamination of the gel coat on a fiberglass cap. By then the reset is a bigger job than it needed to be.
Butyl failure and frame corrosion on Hehr and Kinro units
A framed side window clamps through the sidewall with butyl tape on the outer flange and either a clamp ring or a series of screws pulling from inside. Butyl migrates and hardens; road vibration slowly relieves the clamp load; the joint opens at the top corners first because that is where water sits longest.
Because the water then runs inside the wall rather than onto the floor, a leaking window is one of the most common upstream causes of subfloor rot we find. Aluminum window frames also corrode where they contact dissimilar metal at the fasteners, and a pitted frame will not seal again no matter how much butyl goes behind it. That is a frame replacement, not a reseal.
Racked openings from chassis flex and body twist
Motorhome bodies twist. Park a coach with one jack on a curb, load it unevenly, or take a hard hit at a corner, and the window and windshield openings go out of square. A glass opening only has to be out by a few millimeters across the diagonal to put a point load into one corner of the pane.
The signature is a new windshield that cracks from a corner within weeks, with no impact point anywhere on the glass. We measure diagonals on every opening before setting a replacement pane. If the opening is out, the glass is the symptom and the structure is the repair.
Failed interpane seals in dual pane windows
Dual pane RV windows use a sealed air gap between two panes with a desiccant filled spacer around the perimeter. When that perimeter seal fails, humid air enters, the desiccant saturates, and the unit fogs permanently between the panes. Elevation change makes it worse, because pressure differentials pump air through any compromised seal.
Nothing about a fogged unit can be repaired in the field. The insulated glass unit itself has to be rebuilt or replaced. What we can do is confirm that the failure is the interpane seal and not condensation on the room side of the glass, which points at a ventilation problem instead.
Improper prior installation
We see a fair number of panes set with the wrong material. Common examples: silicone used where urethane belongs, which never bonds and never can be primed over; no pinch weld primer over ground bare metal, which corrodes under the bead; a bead laid without a proper dam so the glass sits too deep and the pane contacts the flange.
Every one of these produces the same complaint a year later, which is a leak that comes back after being resealed twice. The correct fix is a full cut out, a clean substrate back to sound material, correct primer, and a new bead of the right product.
How we perform this repair
Glass work is a materials discipline. The urethane, the primer, the substrate prep, and the cure conditions are the job. Everything else is handling.
The process, start to finish:
- Identify the glazing type and measure the opening. We confirm whether the pane is bonded, gasket set, or framed, then measure both diagonals of the opening and check the flange for flatness. An opening that is out of square across the diagonal gets corrected before any glass is ordered.
- Source the correct pane. Class A windshields are model and year specific and frequently on lead time, and a two piece unit means matching both halves plus the center divider. Framed units are identified by Hehr or Kinro part number stamped in the frame, plus wall thickness and radius. We confirm the part before removal so the coach is not sitting open.
- Remove without damaging the flange. Bonded glass comes out with a cold knife or a fiber line cutter worked through the bead, not a pry bar. Gasket set glass is removed by releasing the filler strip and rolling the gasket lip. Framed windows come out from inside by releasing the clamp ring or screw ring, with the old butyl scraped off both surfaces rather than left as a base layer.
- Prepare the substrate. Old urethane is trimmed to a thin uniform layer for the new bead to bond to, bare metal is cleaned and treated with pinch weld primer, and gel coat is scuffed and cleaned with the manufacturer specified activator. Fiberglass flanges that flex under hand pressure are repaired before glass goes anywhere near them.
- Set the glass. Bonded panes get a primed frit band, setting blocks to control height, and a triangular bead of a certified urethane such as Sika or Dow laid to the specified height and width so it compresses to the correct thickness. Gasket set panes get a new gasket, a soaped rope pull, and the filler strip rolled in last. Framed windows get fresh butyl tape of the correct thickness and are pulled down evenly in a cross pattern so the frame does not distort.
- Respect the cure. Urethane has a specified safe drive away time that depends on temperature and humidity, and full cure is longer than that. A coach with a freshly bonded windshield does not get moved, jacked, or leveled until the adhesive has cured, because body flex during cure is what puts a wave in the bead and creates the leak you find in six months.
- Water test and recalibrate. Every pane gets a hose test at pressure and dwell before delivery. Where a forward camera, rain sensor, or lane assist module mounts to the glass, as on Sprinter, Transit, and ProMaster based coaches, the system gets a static target or dynamic drive recalibration to the manufacturer procedure and we document the completed calibration.
What this costs and how we quote it
Glass is quoted as parts plus set labor, and on RV work the part usually dominates. A large one piece Class A windshield is a low volume item with freight and crating costs that a passenger car pane does not carry, and a two piece unit means two panes plus the divider and both gaskets. Framed side windows are quoted by unit, and the reseal versus replace decision is made off the frame condition, not the glass condition.

Glass damage from a road stone, vandalism, or a falling branch is a comprehensive loss, not a collision loss, and on many policies comprehensive glass carries a different deductible than the collision deductible. Can an RV windshield crack be repaired instead of replaced?
Only while it is still a chip. Resin injection works on a pit or star break smaller than roughly a quarter that has not yet run a crack to the edge of the glass, and not inside the driver acuity zone where the repair leaves visible distortion. Once a crack has reached the glass edge, the pane has lost its integrity and repair is not an option regardless of length.
What is the difference between a one piece and two piece Class A windshield?
A one piece is a single large curved pane; a two piece uses two panes with a center divider post between them. Two piece units are more common on older and wider coaches because a single pane that size is expensive to manufacture and ship. On a two piece, replacing one half often means resetting both, since the divider seal and gasket set is shared between them.
How long does urethane need to cure before I can drive the RV?
Safe drive away time depends on the specific urethane, the ambient temperature, and the humidity, and it is stated by the adhesive manufacturer rather than by us. What matters more on an RV is that full cure runs well past safe drive away, and body flex during that window is what creates a wave in the bead. We hold coaches through cure and do not level or jack them during it.
Why does my dual pane RV window look foggy inside?
The perimeter seal between the two panes has failed and the desiccant in the spacer is saturated. Humid air is now cycling into the gap and condensing there, which is why the fog appears and disappears with temperature. It cannot be cleaned or dried out, because the moisture is inside a sealed unit. The insulated glass unit has to be rebuilt or replaced.
Can a leaking RV window be resealed, or does it need replacement?
It depends entirely on the frame, not the glass. If the aluminum frame is straight and free of corrosion pitting at the flange, we can pull the unit, remove all old butyl from both surfaces, install new butyl tape of the correct thickness, and re-torque the clamp ring evenly. If the flange is pitted or the frame is distorted, no sealant will hold and the unit gets replaced.
Do you recalibrate driver assistance cameras after glass replacement?
Yes, where the camera or sensor is mounted to the glass being replaced, which covers Sprinter, Transit, and ProMaster based coaches and most modern truck chassis. Recalibration is done to the manufacturer procedure, either static with targets at measured distances or dynamic on a drive cycle, and the completed calibration is documented on the repair order. It is a separate operation from the glass set.
How long does it take to get a Class A windshield?
Often weeks rather than days. These are low volume panes, they ship crated by freight rather than parcel, and specific model year curvatures can be back ordered at the manufacturer. We confirm availability and lead time before removing anything, so the coach is not sitting with an open opening while a pane is located.
My new windshield cracked from the corner with no rock strike. Why?
That is the signature of an out of square opening putting a point load into one corner of the pane. It happens after body twist from uneven jacking, a corner impact, or a soft bonding flange that lets the glass carry structural load it was never meant to. The fix is measuring both diagonals of the opening and correcting the structure before another pane goes in.
