How this platform is built
Travel trailers span a wider construction range than any other RV category, from a 2,500 pound single axle unit to a 9,000 pound triple slide, and the build method matters more than the badge on the front. Knowing which one you have determines nearly everything about how a repair is approached.
The chassis
Almost universally a Lippert or BAL steel frame: two main rails with welded crossmembers on 16 to 24 inch centers, tapering forward into a welded A-frame that carries the coupler, the tongue jack, the propane tanks, and the battery. Axles are Dexter or Lippert, leaf sprung on equalizers for tandems or straight-mounted on single axle units, with torsion axles on some higher-end builds.
The A-frame to main rail junction is the highest-stress weld on the trailer. Everything the tow vehicle does to the trailer arrives through that joint, and it is loaded in bending every time the trailer goes over a driveway apron or a railroad crossing. Tongue weight should sit at 10 to 15 percent of loaded trailer weight, and trailers loaded outside that range put loads into the A-frame the designer did not intend.
Body construction method
Stick and tin means a wood stud wall with fiberglass batt insulation, an interior panel, and corrugated aluminum sheet hung on the outside. The skin carries no load. It flexes independently of the frame, which is why the corrugations exist, and it is fastened at seams under vertical and horizontal moldings that are sealed with butyl.
Laminated means a vacuum-bonded sandwich: smooth fiberglass outer skin, Azdel or lauan substrate, block foam, and a welded aluminum tube frame. The panel is stressed and carries load. It is lighter for its stiffness, smoother, and completely different to repair, because damage that a stick and tin wall absorbs by denting a skin panel gets transmitted into the structure on a laminated wall.
The chassis-to-habitation joint
The floor is a laminated or plywood-over-joist deck bolted and lag-screwed to the frame rails, with the wall structure standing on the floor edge. On stick and tin trailers the wall sits on the floor perimeter and is fastened through the bottom plate. On laminated trailers the wall panel bonds to a floor edge member.
The critical consequence is that frame flex reaches the walls through the floor perimeter. When an A-frame joint fatigues, when a trailer has been chronically overloaded, or when a tandem has a broken equalizer that puts all the load on one axle, the frame deflects more than the floor perimeter can follow. On a stick and tin trailer that shows up as seam separation at the corner moldings. On a laminated trailer it shows up as a crack in the fiberglass at the front cap seam or above a wheel well.

Cracks at the weld toes where the A-frame members meet the main rails, at the coupler attachment, and around the tongue jack mount are the defining structural failure of a bumper pull. The A-frame is a long lever, the coupler is at the end of it, and every bit of pitch input from the tow vehicle is bending that joint. Trailers towed with too little tongue weight, or with a weight distribution hitch set up incorrectly, fatigue this joint far faster than the average.
Rear wall separation
The rear of a tandem axle trailer has a long overhang behind the axles, and the rear wall is at the end of that lever. Pothole and expansion joint input whips the rear, and the rear wall corner joints work loose over years. On stick and tin trailers the rear corner molding opens and the caulk line splits. On laminated trailers the rear cap seam separates. Either way, water follows within a season and the failure goes from cosmetic to structural.
Seam molding sealant failure on stick and tin
Every vertical and horizontal molding on an aluminum-skinned trailer covers a seam sealed with butyl tape. Butyl hardens with heat and ultraviolet exposure, and the screws that hold the molding work loose with vibration. Water enters at a seam, runs down inside the skin where nothing is visible, and rots studs and the floor perimeter while the outside looks perfect. This is the most under-detected failure mode in the entire towable market.
Delamination below windows and at the front cap on laminated walls
Laminated trailers advertise their water problems more honestly. Water entering at a window frame, a front cap seam, or a slide corner breaks the bond between skin and substrate, and the panel shows waves, bubbles, or a hollow sound when tapped. The debonded area is nearly always larger than the visible one, and it grows every hot day as trapped moisture expands.
Axle, spring, and equalizer failures that read as body damage
Tandem axle travel trailers are frequently loaded at or beyond their rating, and the first thing to go is the suspension. A broken leaf, a worn equalizer bushing, or a bent axle puts uneven load into the frame, and the trailer starts sitting nose-high or nose-low.
