How this platform is built

The ProMaster is the North American version of a European cab forward van, and almost everything unusual about it traces back to that origin. The engine sits transversely ahead of the front axle, the transaxle drives the front wheels, and everything behind the firewall is free of drivetrain intrusion. Wheelbases run 118, 136 and 159 inches, with a 159 extended body adding overhang behind the rear axle, plus cab chassis and cutaway versions used for box and camper builds.

Chassis and running gear

Front wheel drive concentrates mass and crash structure ahead of the firewall. The front subframe carries the engine, transaxle and lower control arms, and it is the component that absorbs a front corner hit. The front overhang is short and low, which means curb strikes, wheel stops and steep driveway aprons contact the lower fascia and the subframe leading edge far more often than they do on a rear drive van.

The rear axle is a simple beam with leaf springs and no differential housing to protect. That is convenient for underfloor tank and battery installations, and it also means a rear impact goes straight into the rear frame extensions and the floor pan rather than being partially absorbed by a driveline.

Body construction

The body is a steel unibody with unusually large flat areas. Roof heights are low and high, with high roof giving about 76 inches of interior standing height. The side panels behind the sliding door are big, shallow and lightly crowned, and the roof on high roof models is a broad formed panel supported by transverse ribs on a regular spacing.

Shallow crown in thin gauge is the defining repair characteristic of this van. A panel with little shape has little stiffness, so it dents easily, it oil cans after a poor repair, and it resists metal finishing. Damage that would vanish into a beaded Transit panel stays visible on a ProMaster flank.

Where the body meets the build

The floor is flat, ribbed and thin, and the sidewalls have vertical structural ribs behind the interior panels on a known spacing. Conversion builders through-bolt furniture to the floor ribs and screw wall framing to the side ribs. Cutaway ProMasters take a separate box or camper shell bolted to a rear frame, which introduces a cab to box gap that flexes independently.

Because the sheet is thin, a bolted attachment that was fine when it was new becomes an elongated hole after a few thousand miles of washboard, and a collision finishes the job. On any built van we check the bolt pattern at every floor and wall attachment on the strike side, not just the ones near the visible damage.

Wide body corner strikes

The rear corners are close to square and the mirrors stand well outboard, so the ProMaster occupies more lateral space than the driver expects from inside it. Alley walls, loading dock uprights, drive through lanes and gate posts take the rear corner and the mirror arm. The corner panel wraps from the side into the rear door aperture, so a corner strike usually disturbs rear door fit as well as the panel itself.
