An RV interior is a stressed assembly. Cabinets are frequently structural, tying the sidewall to the roof and adding rigidity the walls do not have on their own. Removing an overhead cabinet run because it looks dated can measurably change how much the sidewall flexes, which is why we treat a remodel as a structural exercise before we treat it as a design exercise.

We build to fit rather than to catalog dimensions, since almost nothing in an RV is square, plumb, or repeated twice. Templates get made from the actual opening.

Damage and failure modes we see

Most of the interior work we redo is not our own. It is a remodel done with residential materials and residential methods that lasted one or two seasons of travel. These are the specific ways that fails.

Screw pull out in lauan and thin skinned panels

The interior skin of most coaches is lauan plywood, often only 1/8 inch or 3 mm thick, bonded to a frame of one inch aluminum tube or thin wood stud on 16 inch centers or wider. A residential cabinet installer drives screws into that skin because it feels like a wall. It is not a wall, it is a membrane.

The cabinet holds fine in the driveway. Then the coach goes over expansion joints for four hours, the fasteners work in an oversized hole, and the screw head pulls through the lauan face veneer. The symptom is a cabinet that sags at one corner and doors that stop lining up. The consequence of leaving it is that the remaining fasteners now carry the whole load and the run comes off the wall entirely, usually while somebody is driving.

Countertop cracking at unsupported spans

Quartz and solid surface are strong in compression and weak in tension across an unsupported span. In a house a countertop sits on a continuous cabinet run over a level slab. In an RV the same slab spans a sink cutout, an aisle, and a slide out edge on a chassis that twists.

Cracks propagate from the corners of the sink cutout and the cooktop cutout, which are stress risers unless they are radiused rather than cut square. A crack that starts as a hairline at a cutout corner will run the full width within a season of travel. Prevention is a continuous substrate, radiused inside corners, and reinforcement rod set into the underside across the cutout.

Weight creep past cargo carrying capacity

This is the failure mode nobody thinks about until they weigh the coach. Replacing laminate counters with quartz, plywood cabinet boxes with hardwood, and vinyl with tile can add 500 to 900 pounds to an interior, and that weight comes straight out of your cargo carrying capacity, which is printed on a yellow sticker inside the coach.

The result is a coach that is over its gross vehicle weight rating with a family and full tanks aboard, which loads tires past their rating, extends stopping distance, and stresses suspension components. We weight budget every remodel against the actual CCC number and give you the running total before material selections are locked, because the alternative is finding out on a scale after the money is spent.

Residential fasteners and vibration loosening

A coarse thread drywall screw into a wood stud is a perfectly good house fastener. On a vehicle it is a countdown. Road vibration is a continuous cyclic load, and any threaded fastener without a locking feature backs out under it. So do the cam locks and knock down fittings used in flat pack furniture, which rely on friction that vibration defeats.

The correct approach is mechanical: through bolts with nylon insert lock nuts and backing plates into the structural frame, structural adhesive at panel to frame joints, blind rivets where a frame member is accessible from one side only, and screws only where they land in real framing with correct pilot holes. Anything else is scheduling a callback.

Slide room interference after a remodel

A remodel that adds even 3/4 inch to the depth of a cabinet face or the thickness of a floor near a slide room is enough to catch the slide on retraction. The slide motor does not know it is jammed, it just keeps pulling until something gives, and what gives is usually the slide room fascia, a rail, or the flooring itself.

This is why we measure slide clearance in both positions before designing, and why we do a full extension and retraction cycle test at the end of any remodel that touched anything within a foot of a slide opening. Owners who discover the interference themselves usually discover it as damage.

Panel adhesive failure and hidden moisture

Wall and ceiling panels are bonded to the frame with contact adhesive or a foam bond, and heat plus age releases it. A ceiling panel that has started to drop between fasteners looks cosmetic. Often it is the first visible sign of a roof leak that has softened the panel core, and covering it with a new panel traps the moisture.

We probe with a pinless moisture meter before any panel goes over an existing surface. If readings are elevated, the remodel stops and the water source gets found first. Building a new interior over a wet structure is the single most expensive mistake in this category, because the finish work has to come out again.

How we perform this repair

Remodels are done in a fixed sequence. Skipping steps is what produces jobs that look finished and behave badly.

How a remodel runs through our shop:

  1. Survey and moisture map first. Pinless moisture meter readings across floor, lower walls, and ceiling, plus a check of every roof penetration and window frame. Elevated readings stop the project and open a separate repair.
  2. Weigh and budget. We pull the cargo carrying capacity from the coach data sticker, weigh the coach if it has not been weighed, and build a running weight tally for every material selection before anything is ordered.
  3. Template the actual openings. Cardboard or laser templates from the real cabinet openings and wall planes, since nothing in a coach is square and inherited dimensions are usually wrong by a quarter inch or more.
  4. Demo carefully and record structure. Cabinet runs that carry sidewall to roof load are identified during demo, and where one is removed we design a replacement load path rather than assuming the wall will cope.
  5. Build in materials chosen for weight and stability. Baltic birch and quality prefinished plywood over particle board, aluminum tube subframes where a span needs stiffness, and lightweight solid surface or laminate on a continuous substrate where quartz would blow the weight budget.
  6. Fasten mechanically to real structure. Through bolts with backing plates and nylon insert lock nuts into frame members, structural methacrylate or polyurethane adhesive at panel joints, blind rivets to aluminum tube, and pilot drilled screws only where they land in solid framing.
  7. Radius every cutout corner and reinforce the underside of countertop spans, then support the slab continuously rather than at cabinet ends.
  8. Cycle test everything before it leaves. Slides in and out under power, drawers and doors under a shake test, and a road test where the coach is driven and then reinspected for anything that moved.

Remodels are quoted by scope of work rather than by square foot, because two identical looking kitchens can differ by a factor of three depending on whether the cabinet boxes are sound, whether the countertop can be templated in place, and whether anything structural is being moved.

On a lighter chassis we recommend lightweight solid surface or a high pressure laminate instead, which gets a similar look at a fraction of the mass.

How long does a full interior remodel take?

Plan in weeks, not days. A kitchen and bath refresh typically runs two to four weeks in the shop, and a full interior rebuild on a large coach runs considerably longer. The timeline is driven by cabinet build time, material lead times on surfaces, and any structural or moisture work found during demolition. We give you a schedule at authorization and update it if demolition changes the scope.

Can you remove a wall or change the floor plan?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on whether that wall is structural. Many interior partitions and overhead cabinet runs in a coach tie the sidewall to the roof and carry real load, so removing them without a replacement load path lets the sidewall flex more than it was designed to. We determine that during survey and, where a wall has to go, we design and build the replacement structure into the new layout.

Do I need to worry about the slide outs during a remodel?

Yes, and it is the most commonly missed detail. Adding 3/4 inch of flooring thickness or cabinet face depth near a slide opening is enough to catch the room on retraction, and the motor will keep pulling until something breaks. We measure clearance in both extended and retracted positions before design and cycle the slides fully before the coach leaves.

Can you remodel a coach that has water damage?

Not until the water source is stopped and the wet structure is replaced. Building new finish over a damp subfloor or a softened wall core traps moisture, grows mold behind the new surface, and forces the finish work to come out again within a year. We map moisture before any remodel and, if readings are elevated, we quote the repair as a separate first phase.

What cabinet materials hold up best in an RV?

Baltic birch and quality prefinished plywood for boxes, since they hold fasteners and resist delamination far better than particle board or MDF, which swell permanently at the first water contact. Solid hardwood is used for face frames and doors where its weight is justified. Aluminum tube subframes go under long spans. The material matters less than the fastening method, but particle board in a vehicle is a false economy.
