What this repair covers
RV appliances are not household appliances in smaller boxes. An absorption refrigerator has no compressor and no moving parts at all, it runs on heat and a sealed ammonia solution, and it fails in ways a residential technician has never encountered. A twelve volt compressor refrigerator is closer to household equipment but lives on a battery bank with voltage that swings all day.
We work both, plus everything else in the galley. What we do not do is dispose of a sealed cooling unit improperly or open a refrigerant circuit without the right recovery handling, which is part of why this work belongs in a licensed shop.

Damage and failure modes we see
Refrigerators account for the large majority of appliance work in an RV shop, and the two technologies fail for completely unrelated reasons. Knowing which one is in your coach is the first step in understanding what is wrong with it.
Absorption cooling unit blockage and sodium chromate residue
An absorption cooling unit circulates ammonia, water, hydrogen, and sodium chromate as a corrosion inhibitor through sealed steel tubing. Over time the chromate can precipitate and crystallize in the boiler section, and the circulation slows or stops. The refrigerator then runs, the flue gets hot, and nothing gets cold.
The diagnostic evidence is a yellow or green powder residue on the cooling unit tubing behind the exterior access panel, and often a sharp ammonia odor at the roof vent. Once a cooling unit is blocked it is not repairable, and continuing to run it puts full burner heat into a boiler with no circulation. That is a fire risk, not just a broken refrigerator, and it is the reason we tell owners to stop using an absorption unit that smells of ammonia.
Off level operation and the damage owners do not see
Absorption cooling depends on gravity returning liquid ammonia through the absorber coils. Parked more than roughly three degrees side to side or six degrees front to back and the liquid pools instead of flowing. Ten minutes will not hurt anything. A weekend on a sloped driveway or an afternoon of driving on a canted road with the refrigerator running is what starts the crystallization.
The consequence is delayed by months. The owner remembers no single event, the refrigerator simply gets weaker each season until it will not hold safe food temperature. By then the cooling unit is the repair. Leveling before running the refrigerator is the cheapest maintenance on the whole coach.
Control board, igniter, and gas valve failures
Both Dometic and Norcold absorption units use a control board that manages source selection, igniter spark, and gas valve timing. Boards fail from heat and from voltage spikes, and the classic symptom is a unit that works on AC and refuses to light on propane, or one that lights and drops out after a minute because the flame sensor circuit is not proving flame.
Igniter electrodes carbon up and the spark gap widens, which is a cleaning and adjustment, not a board. A partially blocked burner orifice from spider webs is even more common, particularly on a coach stored for a season. Manufacturers have issued recall actions on certain Norcold and Dometic models over the years related to boiler and gas control concerns, so we check model and serial against open recall records before quoting a repair, since a covered unit changes the whole decision.
Compressor refrigerator low voltage lockout
Twelve volt compressor refrigerators use a controller that shuts the compressor down at a programmable low voltage threshold to protect the battery bank. On a coach with tired lead acid batteries and long wire runs, voltage at the appliance sags below the cutout every night. The refrigerator stops, warms, restarts in the morning when the sun hits the panels, and the owner reports intermittent failure.
The appliance is fine. The wiring gauge, the connection resistance, or the battery capacity is the fault. Diagnosing this by replacing a controller is a common and expensive mistake, which is why we measure voltage at the appliance terminals under compressor load before ordering anything.
Cooktop thermocouple, orifice, and igniter faults
A burner that lights and goes out when the knob is released has a thermocouple or flame sensor failing to hold the safety valve open, either because the tip is out of the flame or because the thermocouple itself has lost output. A burner with a lazy yellow flame has a partially blocked orifice, usually spider web or dust, and yellow flame means incomplete combustion and soot.
Ovens add a second layer: the safety valve, the thermostat capillary bulb, and the pilot or electronic ignition. An oven that cycles wildly hot and cold usually has a capillary bulb that has slipped out of its clip and is reading cabinet air rather than oven air. Left alone, a sooting burner deposits carbon on the range hood and the cabinet above it.
Washer dryer and microwave failures
Combination washer dryer units in a coach fail at the drain pump and the door seal more than anywhere else, because they run on uneven ground with limited drain height and a gray tank that can back pressure the discharge. A unit that fills and will not drain is usually a pump impeller fouled with lint or a discharge hose routed above the pump head height.
Microwaves and convection microwaves in RVs fail at the door interlock switches and the high voltage components, and increasingly at the inverter board on convection models. The one appliance specific issue is that many are fed from an inverter with a modified sine wave output, which some microwave controls will not tolerate and which shortens component life.

How we perform this repair
Appliance diagnosis is about proving the supply before condemning the appliance, then proving the appliance before condemning the sealed part of it.
The standard sequence on an appliance complaint:
- Confirm supply at the appliance. Propane manifold pressure measured with a manometer at roughly 11 inches water column, AC voltage at the receptacle under load, and DC voltage at the terminals while the compressor is actually drawing.
- Read stored fault codes and observe the ignition or start sequence end to end with the exterior access panel off, watching for spark, flame color, and flame retention at the sensor.
- On absorption units, inspect the cooling unit boiler section for yellow chromate residue, check the flue for soot and blockage, and measure boiler tube temperature with an infrared thermometer to confirm heat is being applied and not being carried away.
- Run a cooling performance test. Absorption units get a pull down measured over eight to twelve hours with a logging thermometer in the fresh food compartment and the freezer. Compressor units get a shorter run with amperage and voltage logged at the same time.
- On compressor units, measure voltage drop across the entire supply run from battery to appliance under load. More than a few tenths of a volt across a connection tells us where the real fault is.
- Repair to the failed component. Cooling units are replaced as an assembly with a factory or remanufactured unit, boards and igniters and gas valves are replaced individually, and orifices are cleaned with a torch tip cleaner rather than drilled, since drilling changes the gas flow rate permanently.
- Reinstall with the sealing baffles and the roof vent path restored exactly, because an absorption refrigerator that cannot convect air up the back will never perform regardless of what was replaced. We check baffle position and add a vent fan when the design calls for it.
- Verify by measurement, not by touch. Final sign off requires a documented temperature log showing the fresh food compartment holding safe food temperature over a full cycle.

Appliance work is quoted after diagnosis because the cost spread on a single complaint is enormous. A refrigerator that will not cool can be a spider web in a burner orifice or a complete cooling unit, and those two repairs are not in the same category.

Appliance failures are ordinarily wear and are not covered. The exceptions worth knowing about are impact damage in a collision, a lightning or power surge event where the policy includes it, water intrusion that reached an appliance, and rodent damage where the policy covers animals.
The other path is a fire loss, since a failed absorption refrigerator is a recognized ignition source. If a refrigerator caused or contributed to a fire, preserve it. How do I know if my RV refrigerator cooling unit has failed?
The three signs together are conclusive: a strong ammonia odor at the roof vent or behind the exterior access panel, yellow or green powder residue on the cooling unit tubing, and a boiler section that gets hot while nothing in the cabinet gets cold. Any one alone is suggestive. All three means the sealed cooling unit is blocked or leaking, and it should be taken out of service immediately rather than run while you decide.
How level does an absorption refrigerator need to be?
Within roughly three degrees side to side and six degrees front to back while it is running, which is close to how level you would want to sleep. Brief periods off level while driving are fine because motion keeps the solution moving. Sustained off level operation while parked is what causes crystallization in the boiler, and the damage is cumulative and invisible until the unit stops cooling entirely.
Should I convert my absorption refrigerator to a twelve volt compressor unit?
It is a good move if you boondock in heat, park on uneven ground, or already have lithium batteries and solar. Compressor units cool faster, hold temperature above 90 degrees Fahrenheit where absorption units struggle, and do not care about level. The trade is a real DC load that needs battery capacity and adequate wire gauge, plus cabinet modification and a vent panel change during the conversion.
Why does my refrigerator work on electric but not on propane?
That pattern isolates the fault to the gas side: a blocked burner orifice, a carboned or misaligned igniter electrode, a failed gas valve, or a control board not proving flame. Spider webs in the burner tube are the single most common cause after storage. The cooling unit itself is fine, since it clearly works when heated electrically, so this is usually an inexpensive repair.
My twelve volt refrigerator shuts off overnight and restarts in the morning. Why?
That is the controller hitting its low voltage cutout, which protects your battery bank. The cause is usually battery capacity, a wire run too small for the current, or resistance at a connection or fuse block. Measure voltage at the appliance terminals while the compressor is running rather than at the battery. A drop of more than a few tenths of a volt tells you where the resistance is.
Are there recalls on RV refrigerators?
Yes. Both Norcold and Dometic have issued recall actions on specific absorption model and serial ranges over the years, generally related to boiler tube and gas control concerns. Whether your unit is included depends on the model and serial number on the data plate behind the lower exterior access panel. We check that before quoting, because an included unit changes the economics of repair versus replacement entirely.
Why does my cooktop burner go out when I release the knob?
The thermocouple or flame sensor is not holding the safety valve open. Either the tip has drifted out of the flame, it is carboned over, or the thermocouple has lost its output with age. Sometimes the burner cap is seated wrong so the flame does not reach the sensor. It is an inexpensive part, and the safety valve behavior is doing exactly what it should by shutting off gas it cannot prove is burning.
Can a residential refrigerator go in an RV?
Yes, and many newer coaches come that way from the factory. It needs an inverter sized for the compressor start load, a battery bank that can carry it while unplugged, secure mounting that will survive road vibration, and a modified cabinet opening with the old vent path sealed and finished. It cools far better than absorption, but it will not run on propane, so shore power or a generator becomes necessary during long stops.
