Reefer and Insulated Box Repair in Brea, CA
Reefer truck repair in Brea has to solve three problems at once, and only one of them is visible. An insulated box is an outer skin, a foamed in place polyurethane core and an inner liner, and a puncture through the skin lets moisture into a foam core that will never dry out on its own. That is a thermal problem, because saturated foam stops insulating. It is also a health inspection problem, because a compromised liner is no longer a cleanable, non porous food contact surface. The cosmetic damage is the least important part of the repair.
That is the boundary against a dry box on the same chassis. On a dry van a skin puncture is weather and structure, and a patch that keeps water out is a complete repair. On a reefer the same puncture demands that the wet foam be removed, the core restored, the liner made continuous again and the repair detailed so it does not create a cold bridge. The visible patch is the last step, not the job.

How this platform is built
An insulated body is a sandwich panel structure with a refrigeration unit hung on the front bulkhead. Everything about the repair follows from the sandwich: two skins that are structural in shear, a foam core that provides both insulation and panel stiffness, and joints that have to be continuous in three different ways at once, structurally, thermally and hygienically.
Chassis and refrigeration unit mounting
Reefer bodies ride on the same medium duty chassis as dry boxes, typically an Isuzu, a Hino, a Freightliner M2 or an International, with the body mounted through sills and brackets. What is different is the front bulkhead, which carries the transport refrigeration unit. Those units are heavy and they vibrate continuously while running, including while the truck is parked.
The bulkhead therefore takes a fatigue load nothing on a dry box experiences. Cracks around unit mounting points, distortion of the front panel, and sealant failure at the mounting penetrations are all common and all traceable to that constant vibration.
The insulated panel sandwich
Walls are typically two to three inches thick and roof and floor are thicker, with foamed in place polyurethane bonded to both skins. Outer skins are FRP or aluminum. Inner liners are FRP or aluminum sheet, chosen for cleanability. Floors are usually an extruded aluminum duct floor that lets cold air circulate under the load.
The foam is not just insulation. It bonds the two skins together and gives the panel its stiffness, so a delaminated area is a structurally soft area as well as a thermally weak one. Tap testing a reefer wall tells you where the bond has failed long before anything is visible.
Joints, doors and thermal continuity
Every corner, every panel joint and every door opening is a place where the insulation has to be continuous or it is not insulation. Door frames use thermal break construction so that metal on the inside is not directly connected to metal on the outside. Seals are usually multi lip rubber against a machined or extruded frame face.
This is why a reefer repair is judged differently from a dry box repair. A structurally sound repair that puts a metal fastener straight through from liner to skin has created a cold bridge, and that bridge will show up as a frost line inside and a condensation stripe outside within one duty cycle.
The damage patterns specific to this platform
Reefer damage is usually mundane in appearance and expensive in consequence.
Foam core saturation from a skin puncture
A forklift tine, a dock corner or a road debris strike puts a hole through the outer skin. Water enters, wicks along the foam and stays. Saturated polyurethane loses most of its insulating value and adds weight, and the wet area is always larger than the hole. We probe and map the wet zone before cutting, because repairing only the visible damage leaves a wet core sealed inside the panel.
Interior liner delamination
Pallets, hand trucks and shifting loads strike the inner liner. FRP liners crack and separate from the foam behind them, and aluminum liners dent and pull away at fasteners. A delaminated liner drums when tapped and flexes when pressed. It is a hygiene failure because the void behind it collects moisture and becomes uncleanable, and it is a structural failure because the panel has lost its bond.
Thermal bridging at previous repairs
The most common problem we inherit is a well intentioned repair that bolted a plate across a damaged area from skin to liner. It is strong, it is watertight, and it conducts cold straight through the wall. The tell is a frost pattern inside that traces the fastener locations exactly, plus persistent condensation and rust staining outside in the same shape.
Door seal and frame geometry
Reefer doors seal against multiple lip seals and any distortion of the opening breaks the seal at one point, which is enough. Frames go out of square from dock impact, hinges wear, and the seal takes a permanent set where it has been compressed unevenly. Operators notice it as increased run time on the refrigeration unit long before they see a gap.
Duct floor and drain damage
Extruded aluminum duct floors get crushed by point loads and by pallet jack wheels in the channels, which blocks airflow and creates warm spots in the load. Floor drains plug with debris, water stands, and the floor to wall joint takes the consequences. Both are food safety findings as well as maintenance items.

Insulated panels are made to order by the body manufacturer with the correct core thickness, skin material and liner, and they ship as freight. Weeks, not days. Because of that, panel section repair with new core and new liner material is very often faster and more sensible than waiting for a full panel, and on a body that is otherwise sound it is also the better repair.
Door seals, hinges, latches and hardware are generally available through the body builder or the hardware manufacturer within days. Duct floor extrusions are body specific. Refrigeration unit components come from the unit manufacturer through their own service network, and that work is not ours: we repair the bulkhead and the mounting, and the unit itself goes to a transport refrigeration dealer.

Insurance considerations for this platform
Reefer claims are supplemented more than any other commercial body claim we handle, for a structural reason rather than a procedural one. The reported damage is a hole in a skin. The actual damage is the saturated core around it and the delaminated liner behind it, and neither can be measured until the panel is opened. We document core moisture and bond condition with photographs and readings at teardown so the supplement is evidence rather than assertion. Expect the final scope to be larger than the first estimate on almost every insulated body loss.
Bringing yours to us from Brea
Our shop is on La Palma Avenue in Yorba Linda, a short run east from Brea. Bring the box empty and clean. We will be opening panels and working inside, and we cannot handle product, hold a load, or work around one.
If the unit is still refrigerating, tell us at intake, and expect to have it shut down and isolated for the duration of any work near the bulkhead. If a puncture is open, get it covered before the box sees rain, because every additional wet inch of core adds to the repair. Frequently asked questions
Why can a small hole in a reefer wall be an expensive repair?
Because the hole is the smallest part of the damage. Water entering through a puncture wicks through the foam core and stays there, and saturated foam stops insulating and stops bonding the two skins together. The wet zone is routinely several times the size of the hole. A proper repair removes the wet core, restores insulation, and makes the liner continuous again before anything cosmetic happens.
Can you just patch the inside liner and leave it?
No, and that is the repair we most often have to undo. A liner patch over a wet core seals moisture in, leaves the bond failure in place, and creates a void that cannot be cleaned. Since the liner is a food contact surface, a patch that traps moisture behind it is a health inspection problem as well as a thermal one. The core has to be addressed first.
What is thermal bridging and why does it matter after a repair?
A thermal bridge is any continuous path of conductive material from the inside surface to the outside surface. Bolting a steel plate through an insulated wall creates one. Cold travels straight through it, so you get a frost pattern inside that traces the fasteners and a condensation and rust stripe outside in the same shape. Insulated panel repairs have to restore the break, not just the strength.
Do you service the refrigeration unit itself?
No. We repair the body, the front bulkhead, the unit mounting structure and the sealing around the penetrations. The refrigeration unit, its compressor, its controls and its refrigerant circuit go to a transport refrigeration dealer. If the unit was damaged in the same loss, we document it and coordinate so both repairs happen in a sensible order rather than in each other's way.
How do you find damage that is not visible on the surface?
Tap testing and moisture readings. A sound insulated panel has a consistent tone; a delaminated area drums and a saturated area sounds dead. Moisture meters confirm where the wet core starts and stops. We map the affected area before cutting so the repair extends to sound material, which is the single biggest factor in whether an insulated panel repair lasts.
Will a repaired reefer body still pass a health inspection?
That is the standard the repair is built to. The finished interior surface has to be continuous, non porous, cleanable and free of voids and exposed core, with no gaps at joints where product residue can collect. We finish liner repairs to that requirement rather than to a cosmetic one, and we tell you plainly if a body has damage elsewhere that would fail an inspection even after our work is complete.
My refrigeration unit runs more than it used to. Could that be the body?
Very often, yes. Increased run time with a healthy unit usually means the box is losing cold, and the three usual causes are a saturated core, a door seal that no longer seats, and a thermal bridge from a previous repair. All three are body problems. A run time increase without a fault code is worth a body inspection before the unit gets torn into.
